how does this compare to other Garmin units. ill do my own research but would love anyone's opinion.
I ordered the 30x from last time and my review is below: hardware the 30x and 32x seems to be the same. so it should apply. but for what the 32x is for the money it is a good deal if you need it.

my last garmin GPS is the Etrex Cx from 2008 I think thats when I got it. I just got this 30x as an extra and see whats new. this review is based on direct comparison with the HCX unit as an upgrade.
GOOD:
- can load more than one map. wheres the older HCx can only use one map set (gpsmapsupp.img)
- high resolution screen. it does make things alot more clearer.
- more features like wireless transfer and birdsview. though I never use it it so can't comment.
- no limites on the tracks
- faster startup time than HCx
- has setting profiles. which i find very useful.
- 30x is smaller and lighter but alittle bit.
CON
- screen INFERIOR to the HCx, less vibrant color not as good. alittle harder to read than HCX when backlight is off. backlight is not as bright also.
- Satellite tracking is WORST than the older HCx. I put the units side by side and the HCx gets a lock faster. and tends to have more accuracy numbers..
- Menu item is BIG. I don't think there is a way to set it smaller. but the main menu on the HCX have smaller icons and can fit more in the screen at once. it was a perfect size. the 30X have these icons with big borders that can only fit about half of what the HCx fit in the screen. This makes you scroll down more often.
- while it don't feel "cheap" but the feeling and weight of the material doesn't seem as robust/rugged as the HCx
- not really a "con" but the control stick is on the left instead of the right like on the HCx. that is a prference though.
- comes with as little as you can imagine. you just get the GPS thats it... when I got the HCX. it included battery, lanyard, belt clip. on the 30x you get nothing. and the belt clip is $10
- operation wise it is not really much faster than the Hcx asside from initial startup.
- the "find address" is alittle strange it is much easier IMHO to find address on the HCx. using same map set I was able to find the adress on the HCx while it won't return anything on the 30x
