It's based on the career of Capt Jules Brunet going to advise the Imperial army but then joining the Shogun rebels. I don't know how native he went but the rough outline of the story really went down that way.

I read the title wrong initially because the 3 was on the line with the movie titled and was like "Casino 3!? When the heck did they even make Casino 2...and why?"

I think I agree, it's one of my favorite movies and it's got one of the best scores. It's also the last of its kind in being one of those historical epics ala Braveheart or Gladiator, a genre of films I think Hollywood needs to revive.

This was one of the first Blu-rays I ever bought and I'm still waiting for a new 4K release.

Edward Zwick directed. Loved Glory and Legends of the Fall. And he does have a knack for period piece epics. The Hans Zimmer score is a keeper too.

Most of these were in the 3 for $15 deal a few weeks ago. Mine just arrived a few days ago. Good deal. Some cases were pretty messed up though. Seems like they may have been customer returns or old stock from stores returned?
AT the time they had another 20% off, so it was 3 for $12.xx

you gotta admit it kinda falls in that category of late 90s/early 2000s movies about other cultures but damn we can't upset the redblooded american audiences so we better cast a white guy as the main char who somehow gets adopted by the natives! e.g. last samurai, last of the mohicans, etc. all that said, both of those movies are fantastic watches and this one is a BIT more respectful of the culture being appropriated, because they kind of make it clear that the last samurai referred to in the title is actually ken watanabe's character, not cruise's. still, they have that bit where (SPOILER) the dude he killed's widow falls in love with him, and where he the great white savior is the one to change the japanese emperor's mind about how to modernize his country.

so all in all, a good watch, but def got some cringe to it in 2023.

Still not as bad as Valhalla as depicted in Thor. It's ok to be white.
