what is the difference between these 12v tools and the 20v line of dewalt tools? Is it worth having both types of batteries instead of the 20v line alone?

12v batteries work on 12v tools. I'm assuming you have 20v tools and batteries, so these are probably worthless to you.

That's like asking what's the difference between AA vs AAA batteries.

You need to buy the batteries that match your tools, 12V vs 20V. The 20V equipment tend to be stronger, thus the higher voltage.

Honestly I wouldn't bother with these. I'd just stick with the 20v. I have both and I'm not impressed with the 12v in comparison. You don't save enough weight/size to make it worth cutting down in power

I'm a contractor and I have mostly 20v and 60v dewalt battery tools. I have a 12v drill/driver that I use nearly every day as a lightweight supplement to my 20v drill and impact. It's much lighter and easy to maneuver for many tasks. That said, obviously if you're framing, drilling concrete holes, using a hole saw, etc, you need the proper tool and the 12v drill ain't it.

I use the 12v driver, 12v light and 12v laser level all the time. 12v definitely has a place. The 12v driver is the best I've ever used.

Well, AA and AAA are the same voltage, 1.5V, but different form factor.

But there are a couple devices that use both, like the Bluetooth speaker, DCR010. It's great and can charge via a USB port.

Definitely NOT like AA and AA, both are 1.5 volts. 12v and 20v are different voltages

12v batteries only work in 12v tools and vice versa for 20v batteries. Stick to 20v since 12v really is only targeted to contractors that need lightweight tools.

The 12v are ultra compact and lightweight compared to 20v. Many people who try 12v love them andend up choosing them first except with dealing with heavier jobs.

If you are interested in 12V platform, Milwaukee is more mature and they have supported them for a very long time. I love my m12 tools use them most of the time unless I need heavy power tools then I go to 20+V systems. The size/weight of m12 is just very nice.

You don't have to be in 1 system, I have like 4. Yeah there is some duplication but for 20V systems you can get adapters pretty easily but I have sold off most of my Dewalt tools as their battery prices IMHO have escalated and other competitors like Ryobi do the job for DIY for a lot less cost. No hate on the tools themselves, the battery pricing is whack and powerstack is whack+.
