IMO it's worth spending $7 more to protect a potential $1000 product.

I don't normally care about brand name but Pelican is legendary and I have thoroughly tested this in a swimming pool. It didn't even let 1 drop of water in!
Same with ziplock bag.

I feel like the name matters. If Pelican puts out a defective product, it impacts their name, which is what has value because it traditionally means something.

If these start up brands screw up, they dissolve the LLC, reorganize, and pump out the same or similar item under new branding and do it all over again.

There is a psychological theory that civility stems from the knowledge of continuous unavoidable interactions with certain people. We govern our behavior when we have to confront the ramifications of prior actions situationally and socially. These start ups and generics don't have that, established brands do. That's why it matters. This is how investment banks exploit customers...they buy up a name, exploit it, run it into the ground, and move on like locusts.

That's a fair point but that doesn't necessarily mean there's real tangible added-value to the product if it's already superior and meets their stds. And thus my point that it's likely they're using one of the highly rated producers and slapping their name on it to up charge. Again, nothing wrong with people buying this if the name gives them a piece of mind.

No, it doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it also doesn't mean the design wasn't theirs and a generic manufacturer didn't make an inferior clone, which is also often the case.

All I meant was when a product is genuinely distributed by a reputable manufacturer, whether a unique or borrowed design, that product can generally be considered to be of some standard quality as their name is on the line, especially when the product is within their recognized field of expertise, as this would be for Pelican.

That said I do acknowledge the cooption of generic items by name brands with nothing more than printing their name on it and doubling the price also definitely happens. I suppose it's a case by case assessment.
