I created a spreadsheet with calculations to compare quality and price of protein powders and other foods.

This is 66.67% purity of a protein blend (not exclusively isolate) and yields 38.95g protein per 1$.

Comparing it to another blend, such as the recent Optimum Nutrition deal that was 77.42% purity blend and 42.71g protein per 1$. So Animal is lower quality and more expensive than that optimum nutrition deal, however also a different in quantity.

Dymatize Elite 100% Whey Blend is 69.44% pure and 26.30g per $1 while not on sale. So probably a comparable product to that, but significantly cheaper as you get 48% more protein per $1.

Note: purity is derived from their nutrition information and not necessarily verified by a third party lab for integrity of label.

This stuff is disgusting, probably the worse protein powder I've had. It has these strange gross balls in it like boba, the texture is like sand, and the flavor is very bad

This info was very helpful - thank you! Mind if I tag you on every protein deal? 😂

Though I put it in terms of cents/g of protein.

Awesome! I do the same but calc $/protein instead of protein/$1. My go/no-go is $2/100g or $.02/g which this slightly above so no-go

No BCAA profile being advertised is kind of a rough sign. If it has a bunch of the glutamine and aspartic acid it's kind of wasted. It's rare to need glutamine and aspartic acid supplemented for the normal person who isnt vegan as these are plentiful in a protein diet. AAs like Leucine, isoleucine, valine etc are the better ones to target when selecting protein powders. 4.6g of AAs is low to begin with if the powder is giving 20g per serving, what's the other stuff?

Just info is all as not all protein powders are created equal. I'd say this is likely pretty low quality as 4.6g of AA is not a lot, ex. BB.com protein powder is 25.4g as a comparison and while it has a lot of glutamine (4.4G) it has a lot of other AAs. ON also has a good AA profile. EAS has a great one as well. When it comes to powders, its best to target one that's 20g with a better AA profile stack than one with 25g that has a lot of non-essentials your body is going to pee out.

Costco warehouse has the Ascent [costco.com] brand whey protein powder on sale until the end of the week for $42 and some change ($48 at dot-com). Macros are much better than this junk.

I just bought the Costco ascent one, does anyone know the purity of that brand?

Also, ascent has stevia and only natural flavors. This one and optimum have sucralose with natural and artificial flavors, if that matters to you.

Same. Jumped on the Ascent since it doesn't have Sucralose. Hard to find a brand that doesn't anymore.

I hope more people pay attention to this. Idk if it's common knowledge or not, but there is a lot more going on than just "$/g of protein." The companies that are transparent with their amino acid profile are going to be the way to go. Dymatize and Optimum nutrition are good examples.

Luckily, whey is naturally pretty well rounded since it's an animal product. The problems don't start until the companies start "padding" the protein amount with cheap amino acids... Look for transparency or assume the worst.

The flavor with animal protein powders is very odd. When I first tried it, it was pretty bad. It doesn't matter what brand you go with. All animal protein powders will have a weird unpleasant taste.
