It's all made by Warren Distribution. They make Kirkland, Super Tech, Amazon, and many other private label brands. It's good stuff.

Why would you ever need to do an emergency oil change?

Yep 👍 2013, 2014, 2015. Then they went to $2/qt during their EOY clearance.
I got them at $1. Pretty good

I'm gonna start changing my 2015 V6 Accord every 5k. Been doing it at the 15% oil life light and the oil comes out completely black and very thin, I know it's a thinner weight oil to begin with but I plan on driving this car til the wheels fall off, an extra oil change a year is very cheap simple assurance. What does everyone do with the extra half quart or so left over? I've started to just flush my engine with the prior oil changes left over oil. I'd have to do 9 changes before I had enough left over oil for a change.

I have to have 8 quarts for my truck, so I always have 2 quarts left from a 2 jug oil change. I use it on anything that needs it around the garage - not for engines but for loosening up anything from door hinges to anything similar.

Buy it…Costco will typically issue a price adjustment for products purchased within 2 weeks of a new ad.
Yeah, that is a good point. Maybe I'll pop in this week and grab them. Thanks for pointing that out.

This is great... except I was planning on doing an oil change this weekend - kinda need it done before the 31st.

Hmmm... now I have to decide if the Slickdealer in me is willing to wait and book up my 30th like that.
Buy and change your oil now, but keep the receipt. When it's on sale, buy and return with your old receipt. Simple and easy.

You'd want to cross reference the LSPI conformance with the API license, not but not before checking the OEM recommendations, which may coincidentally correlate to ACEA standards

Also, you may encounter archived information as D1G2 has been superseded by D1G3, it still retains the SP rating, but it is blue instead of green.

That said, it's unsure how this relates to the ILSAC rating, as I can't find it anywhere on the ELOCS.

To be safe, you may just want to stick with the ACEA rating.

TL;DR stick to the manual.
Good read, but the manual is only good for a few years before the API (or manu) changes and is superseded. As far as I know D2G2 doesn't supersede D1G3, right?

So, for my turbo Subie, for which I have actually experienced something I attributed to LSPI way back when, I choose to use an oil that's designed to mitigate LSPI, eg, D1G3. If a gen 4 or API equivalent is released that is supposedly for turbo engines and LSPI mitigation I'll move to that.

Edit: I don't get the downvotes. It's a fact that API spec's and even manufacturer's spec'd can be superseded. API SL, SN, SN+, etc. GM Dexos 1 gen 1, 2 and now Dexos 1 Gen 3.

Outside of that people have always found a reason to try different oils that may be more robust and provide better protection. A good example is running a 5W-40 heavy duty engine oil in a high-power vehicle only spec'd for API SM. My 2008 STI is an example. I chose to use Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 in place of any Resource Conserving SM-rated 5W-30. This is pretty standard and doesn't hurt a thing. For more sophisticated DIT engines, it's more complicated.

Is this sale just for the big 5 quart jugs or is there a similar sale for the six 1 quart jubs in a box as well? My Jeep is a thirsty sucker

Not worth effort to store it. Just pick up 5qt jug 5w-30 supertech+filter as needed.
0w-16 supertech needs to be available in my area!
I buy oil for the next change when it's on sale and will hoard a few jugs if it's ever on clearance. That means I usually have a jug for each car for anywhere between 3-9 or so months before I need it.

Contrary to some of the posts here, many of us were able to find clearance synthetic for dirt cheap over the past ten years. I still have a couple of jugs of Pennzoil 5W-20 synthetic that's from when API SN first came out for around $10/5 qt jug, maybe a little less. It'll eventually go in my low-powered Subie (2.5i), which isn't picky about having the latest spec oil.

Others on bobistheoilguy have been way luckier than me over near past with funding name-brand synthetics for even cheaper. It's a huge YMMV. My best find was German Castrol 0W-30 for a couple of bucks a quart or less, IIRC. I believe I purchased 24 qts or more for my WRX STi back then.

It's been harder to find clearance oul around me these days, so my stockpile is just those several jugs I mentioned earlier.

I also don't mind having extra in case a friend or family member is tight for cash or time and I can offer a free oil change, but, as you mention, it's pretty easy to go pickup a jug and a filter for that rare case when you need to spend full price.

It may be black but I doubt it's as thin as you think it is. What I mean is that it might shear or dilute with fuel to lower a small amount of cSt @100C (eg, 8.7 cSt —> 8 cSt @100C). The thin look or feel is usually all in our heads.

The only way to know for sure is to send off a sample for analysis. Maybe you are shearing that oil down or diluting it with fuel to a detrimental degree and a shorter interval is prudent. If you don't have any engine issues, then that's probably not likely and you'll find that 5k miles intervals is NOT too long.

If this was meant as sarcasm, it was brilliant! If you are being serious, then it's TMI for most of us. 😊. I just change the oil regularly in all my vehicles and put in the correct weight and make sure to change the filter each time (I occasionally cut them open to inspect them as well). Three of my vehicles have 200+ k miles and my 30 year old pickup has 130k so I assume all is well. They all run great so I'm planning on 400k at least for all but the pickup. I feel that if I get 400k then I've done well.

Just the jugs. M1 quarts are sometimes on sale.

Is it the venerable 4.0? You can probably dump the cheapest oil of the correct spec, as needed, and never have to worry about an oil-related failure. Also, every time you add a quart you're replenishing the additives.

The 0W-20 and 5W-30 appear to be Dexos 2 Gen 2. I haven't looked up whether D2G2 has been tested to mitigate low-speed pre-initiation (LSPI), common in some US direct-injection engines, especially turbos (DIT).

I personally just changed the oil in my turbo Subie (FA20DIT) with Kirkland Signature 5W-30 Dexos 1 (ONE) Gen 3, which IS tested to mitigate LSPI.

When I researched this several years ago, the Dexos 2 (not gen 2) was spec'd by GM for their small turbos, but then they changed it to Dexos 1 due to LSPI. I would personally stick with D1G3 if you have a small turbo engine with direct injection. If you don't have direct injection, then D2G2 will likely be more robust.
FYI anything API SN Plus or SP is designed to protect against LSPI.

Where did you see they were dexos2? That's a diesel spec fluid which I don't believe either of these are. The little green icon looks like a 2 but it is just a logo and you'll see a small 1 inside. I believe they are both dexos1 Gen 2 (which also protects against LSPI).

$3/qt, is that a good deal these days? I usually look for closer to around $1/qt. My 3yr free oil changes is going to come to and end soon on my car so it's been a while since I've purchased oil. I guess everything's more expensive these days.
you pay $1/qt for synthetic?

I think he's serious. He probably races or red lines his vehicle but for most of us who don't rev their cars in the dead of winter to 9000 RPM before the engine warms up, 8000 to 12000 mile intervals is fine. Making sure to check the oil level on older vehicles. Your frame is more likely to rust apart before your oil self-destructs and your engine locks up. OCD is in full effect in some of these oil threads.
