It's all made by Warren Distribution. They make Kirkland, Super Tech, Amazon, and many other private label brands. It's good stuff.

Why would you ever need to do an emergency oil change?

Mine only charges me $20 for labor so I can bring my own cheap kirkland oil and fram filter. I want them to inspect the car anyway for other issues anyway, so it's not really any more hassle to take it in.
For $20 that's a steal, so long as it's a shop that actually performs an inspection and not one that puts the lowest person on the totem pole on the job who knows not what to look at.

I can offer you some slightly used synthetic $1/quart. 😎
You're being smart, but I'd take some of the oil that some of you throw out for my lowly Subie Wink

And a good time to do tire rotation and inspection
Very good point, so long as it's done. If not explicitly a part of the agreement, then an oil change and rotation is all that you'll get. Nothing more will be inspected unless they want to sell you something. This is why DIY or having a trustworthy buyer shop is so important. I have only one shop I trust for things I can't do. They're worth paying more for.

where to find cheap local oil change?
If you can't do it yourself and don't know how to inspect your own vehicle, a local indie shop that'll also inspect the rest of your car is worth the extra cost.

My comment was regarding the Kirkland oil itself. On the product page it says GF-5.
They're not doing the best keeping the page or pictures up to date.
5w-30 is API SP, ILSAC GF-6 as of 2021. https://pqia.org/kirkland-full-sy...motor-oil/

The same PQIA analysis in 2020 was only SN Plus / GF-5.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.

Last deal was $79.99 for a 4 pack in April 2023.

Seems OK but not on fire.

Many people say "oil is cheap insurance", which is right, and you generally can't change oil too often (except that you're more bound to damage something by doing so, e.g. overtorquing the oil plug or something like that). That said, the last car I had to 200k ran 0W40 I changed every 10k with OE filter and M1 oil. And, that was HALF the manufacturer's (OBDC) interval - I just couldn't stomach 20k so I did 10k. When I sold the car it had the original clutch, transmission (stick, I changed the fluid in the "lifetime" transmission twice and it made it drive like a new car each time), and minimal overall maintenance, couple coil packs, water pump, valve cover gasket, etc.
Did you do thw transmission yourself?

Jack stand - singular. I only need to jack it up enough to be able to reach under and open the drain pan Fumoto valve. The jack stand is for safety only. I doubt it's even necessary, since the tire stays on.
hahahaha, you sure you only need to put the car on only 1 jack stand SINGULAR?

hahahahha

I'll tell you the truth, there are a lot that can go wrong when a newbie changes oil and you need an initial investment in tools to get started, it is best to get an experienced person to show you for the very first time, because:

1. It is a challenge to jack up the car and put it on jack stands for newbies, do you even know what kind of jack to use or the correct place to jack up the car? If you mess up here, you might damage your car or get yourself killed. I suggest using ramps as they're easier to use, and remember to get wheel chocks.

2. To a newbie, you might have trouble removing the oil drain plug because the clearance under the car is limited and your ratchet might not provide enough leverage. A longer breaker bar will make things easier.

3. To a newbie, you might have trouble removing the oil filter that was spun on too tightly. It is best to use an oil filter removal tool.

4. You can't dump the used oil filter and used oil anywhere you like, you need to bring them to the appropriate dumping locations, which is an additional hassle.

After you consider all these, paying someone else to do it might seem like the more attractive option. laugh out loud LMAO
Not disagreeing that for some people it may be easier to take it somewhere, especially if they have no tools, ramp etc. Plus, a complete newbie has to be careful about that oil plug, I stripped one on my first car being too aggressive.

That said, have you seen the price of getting an oil change done at Valvoline these days? Not to mention how freakin long it takes now. It's a wait of like 25 minutes per car in the line. I've driven off more than once. Instant oil changes are no longer instant - they take forever.

Something else bothering me is this crap Valvoline started doing recently. When they filled the oil, they didn't fill it full. They filled it 8/10 and said it's in the "safety zone." I had to tell them to fill it up. Must be nice for Valvoline to raise prices to the moon while saving 1/2 quart of oil on each vehicle.

I take this car in for work, mine i do myself.

How hard an oil change is depends on the vehicle and the tools you have available to you.

For my Subarus the oil filter is on top of the engine - couldn't be much easier to change and results in zero mess. Some of my older vehicles had the oil tucked up on the side of the engine - always made a mess.

I also installed a little Fumoto drain valve to make it even easier and less messy. I only have to do the following:

1. Jack car up from one side and add jack stand for safety

2. Slide used oil catch container under the engine drain pan

3. Turn drain valve lever to commence drain.

4. Lower car

5. Remove old oil filter and clean seating area (I only change the filter every other interval - Fram Ultra)

6. When drain is complete, shut drain valve and clean the few drops of oil on the nozzle

7. Fill new filter maybe halfway to wet the pleats and install, if applicable

8. Add oil per manual (5-6 qts depending on which Subie) and check level

9. Start engine and run for ten or so seconds (how long it takes for the idle to come down for me)

10. Check oil level and add as necessary

Anyone can do this - I have faith in you! I've done it in the grass with only hand tools before and im far from the best shade-tree mech. Lol

Some shops might do an oil change with your oil and filter, charging you only for labor and maybe disposal fees. If I wasn't inclined to change my own oil I'm not sure I'd do this unless I had a very good relationship with the shop, because it's your ass if something goes wrong and there's any possibility of it being the oil. Eg, they didn't put enough oil in, you don't check, they blame it on consumption due to your choice of oil.
You jack up the car with the fumoto valve? I owned a 2010 Impreza sedan with a fumoto valve and didn't have to jack up the car at all. Just had to reach in there a bit to turn the valve. The old Impreza had the filter underneath, and nestle in with the exhaust pipe around it and even that I could do without jacking up the car.
