The place I live had a genie opener before I moved in. I added the wifi components to use in conjunction with the Aladdin connect app. The app is buggy and unreliable. I personally can't leave the house without carrying a set of spare keys in the event the app crashes/won't connect/won't function to open the door (I don't have an external keypad). Buyer beware.

Buy this or wait for the 3/4 hp ones that go on sale during BF? Those are in the $78 range seems like.

Also, anyone know a rule of thumb for how much HP is needed for open garage door? I got a 1.25 HP Genie a while back for one of my garage doors and seems over powered (thought it was a deal at the time but don't think I needed that much HP).

I have Aladdin now for 2 years now. Never had any issue. Works great with Alexa and Siri. There are automations as well like close garage door automatically after 30 mins. I get instant notifications on my app. Today I got an email saying that it now works with Amazon Garage Delivery. The set up was seamless although I am yet to get a package that way!

I picked up one of the BF deals last November and installed it shortly after, so almost a year now and I've been very satisfied with it. It replaced an old chain-drive one so the sound difference was insanely noticeable, even my neighbor noticed how ridiculously quiet the belt drive is. Build quality compared to my old one just doesn't compare though - I was able to lift the Genie up to the ceiling with one hand, where as the old one weighed easily 80 pounds of pure metal. It took me by surprise once I had removed the last bolt holding it up. But that will most likely be the case with any brand/model nowadays - nothing is built like the old days. You may not even notice this if your current one being replaced isn't that old. Mine was easily 25+ years old. I would not hesitate to re-purchase the Genie though, and the app has been flawless. Works exceptionally well, and will prompt me if there is an obstruction to the door sensors, preventing the door from closing. And as someone stated, Amazon Key is officially compatible with Genie openers, which used to be exclusive to Chamberlin openers.

In regards to HP, as long as your door is not custom-made, and isn't an over-sized door, you should be fine with a 3/4 HP. I'm using mine on a single car garage door that's no more than 7ft tall. To be on the safe side, just match to your current opener. You can do a quick google search and see what the weight limit is for a 1/2 HP, 3/4HP, etc. and based on the size of the door you own, it'll be quite clear what you can go with. I believe a 3/4HP can lift around 350 pounds but not exactly sure.

TX kind of a big place. Could you narrow it down a little bit.

It's not the door, it's the spring. If your spring is tensioned correctly, you should be able to lift your door with 2 fingers. So even the weakest HP opener should work fine. Old wooden double garage doors with old springs may need the spring replaced. Disconnect your opener to check the tension. It should be extremely easy to open.

Yeah buddy….same thing here. I just bought 1.25 hp at Costco for $300. Not on sale. Comes with all this plus battery backup n outdoor keypad. Just came yesterday. Have not installed. It's overkill for sure.

As a side note I saw genie with a "new lower price" at Home Depot.
I was buying the extension there for around $50. This is what I bought.
