For others who aren't sure what the difference is between the origin and regular version, differences are that the MSRP on the origin is $30 less and only comes with one attachment instead of five. Not sure if it's worth it, considering each attachment sells for over $30 on their site.

For 40$ more, costco has it with 5 attachments , better warranty and a 89$ stand included.

My wife is hair stylist and went through many pro rated dryers. She got this one when some of her dryer were showing some signs that it's on it's way out. At $480 with tax, this was most expensive one she gotten by a mile. She thought it would better then anything she have used before but reality is not even close. Definitely good but no where near $480 good. It's only good for show off. Everyone knows how expensive it is. So if you have $$ to show off, this one is it!

Recommendations then? I need one that isn't so loud when I turn on high.

And more attachments, better warranty, better customer service, and better return policy at $40 more. That's totally worth it for the costco deal

Like others, tempted by the promise of "faster and better" for my wife. However, comment after comment, including Wirecutter, that this is only marginally better and even with the Costo warranty, this crazy $400 appliance gets terrible reliability feedback

I don't meant to hate but people saying it's marginally better. Can you please explain. This air dryer has CFM that is almost half of a $20 conair. It has a lower wattage motor that ran at the same mean wattage will not last as long. It uses cheap parts on the inside and has confirmed multiple reviews of early burnout. It IS quieter but not sure if that is surprising given half the volume of air coming through. So marginally better or actually worse?

Marginally better? Depends on use case. I shoot this supersonic at a child's general direction and it dries the hair. Everything else is not only scorching hot till the child cries AND takes more than 2-3 minute.

My short hair? 30 sec flat. My wife's long hair? 2-3 min.

Is it marginally better? For our family it is not. It is superior than anything else we used.

Let's put it this way: in the curve of diminishing return, this is at a diminishing point. Because I am not sure how many people out there wants a quick and complete hair dry in 50-80% less time without splinters from high heat for an additional $250 and I agree the lifespan is short cos the previous one burnedout at 4.5 years (refurbrished).

Do I recommend it? Sure. But will it fit you and your family? I mean, try it esp. if you have young children whom you don't want to expose to high heat and dry their hair quickly and completely. Would this purchase take precedence over all other purchase? Yes I pay installment on this but that is for my family use case, the raw heat from any other hair dryer is just so dangerous and we will never use full heat on a child even if it takes longer to dry- unless it is a supersonic.

I would never pay Dyson money for a hair dryer, but I did pay $58 for a knockoff about 2 years ago.

The motor location (in the handle) makes it much quieter and a totally different pitch, which is the best part to me. It's better balanced as well. The hole that runs through the head has air drawn through it due to the design, and I'm not sure if that's measured in the motor cfm. It moves a lot of air. Being quieter with a ton of airflow means it's great for drying my dogs, too. The attachments do cut down on the airflow through the center, however. Like I said, mine is a knockoff and has still kinda spoiled me. Who knows, it may have come out of the same factory...

So what was the brand? Do you have a link? I don't see myself paying $400 for a hairdryer but I can risk 60 bucks.

I just jumped on the costco dyson deal after eyeing this dryer for a while now.

I only got it because:
1. Deal on brand new unit (3yr warranty) + (1 year credit card warranty) and if anyhting costco return.
2. Came with a stand
3. Really for ladies in the household since I won't ever use attachments.
4. Slight overall improvement (look, feel, performance)

For a guy with a short hair, I can't tell much difference tbh but it does:
1. have slight more airflow while being more quiet
2. easier to maneuver
3. stand is useful

but my 30 dollar conhair dryer also had 3 settings of hot/warm/cool with cool button and not so bad airflow so it is what it is lol.

I guess its like me buying Galaxy S23 ultra when I don't play any phone games anymore or rarely take any pics.

If you like to go for max dollar for performance I don't think this is really worth it but if you look at all aspects and are okay with it then why not Big Grin
