I believe your assumptions about Thunderbolt are correct, but I cannot independently verify it.

I bought the 4TB version on prime day. The write speeds were incredibly slow on Mac. Was only getting 750/150. Tried different formats, cables, etc.

Turns out shipped with an old firmware that had problems. Only way to update (as far as I could tell) was to install Samsung Magician on PC... Don't have a PC so had to ask friend to do it. After that I'm getting 850/850 on my Mac.

So make sure you have access to a PC.

No. Its a little board inside with an ssd controller and flash memory on it.

Here's a photo of it with the shell removed.

I have one. It died with a red light after about a month of weekly backups. I was able to reformat it, but not on a PC. Of all things, an android phone was able to format it and it worked again after that. I have zero trust for the drive, negating its purpose.
