My wife and I actually prefer to travel to Japan (specifically Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka) during the winter. We've been during the spring and summer as well. Obviously spring is the best time but also the most expensive time. We have gone more times than we can count since we have friends and family that live there.

For us, the summer time is just way too hot and humid. Although the trains have ice cold AC, there is a ton of walking in the thick heat. Weirdly, the only time I have experienced rain in Japan was during the summer.

We prefer winter because:
1. There are way less tourist, which means less wait at attractions of popular restaurants.

2. It is cold but we just wore a thicker pair of pants with a down/puffy coat and we were fine. The trains had the heater blasting so they were nice little breaks to warm up. With all the walking, it didn't really feel all that cold to us (except for our hands)

3. Many popular attractions are decorated with tons of Christmas lights and it just looks magical

4. We found that hotel prices are a little cheaper around the winter time

5. Eating a hot steaming bowl of ramen when it is cold out is one of the best feelings

We also have experienced a snow in Tokyo and it didn't feel too cold. It was just a little annoying because it got our shoes wet and some parts were really slippery. There wasn't a lot of snow but enough for it to visibly coat the floor and to feel it under your feet as you walked.

I've never experienced a Chicago winter but I find it comparable to a winter I've experienced in Portland. It is definitely way colder winter than a LA winter.

The implication appeared to be much more severe. If it is not potable, is not safe to use it anywhere. It will affect, rain, crops, etc. Yes, I love Japanese people individually, but the government is different. I believe dumping "Treated and diluted but still slightly radioactive wastewater" isn't good for the ecosystem overall.... to be honest, I don't know what / who to believe anymore. I have a work-related trip coming up soon to Tokyo as well..

From the public information of IAEA(organization of United Nations who take charges over the nuclear weapons, accidents and regulations) this is quite safe. This project actually starts in 2021, IAEA with experts from around the world(include China, Republic of Korea, Russia which are vicinity countries) have heavily taken part in the project with Japan gov and Japan has allowed open inspection from worldwide, at least 6?(not remembered exactly, at least 3+) independent labs worldwide have examined the samples and no issues are found. Looks more like a potential concern than a real impactful problem to me.

I've been wanting to visit Japan for a while now, and this is way cheaper than just flying out of my own state, wow. I need to consider flying out of California if I ever end up going.

There's a saying, dilution is the solution to pollution... Unfortunately distributing treated radioactive byproducts into the ocean isn't a new concept. USA has had nuclear powered naval vessels and submersibles for 50+ years. There are numerous papers online discussing methods of onboard discharging for such vessels, published as early as the 60s.

I'm not advocating for nor against, and not trying to debate anything. Just pointing this out for those worried.
