"Contadina San Marzano Style Chopped Tomatoes are Italian tomatoes grown from San Marzano seeds in the rich soil of Southern Italy. Once ripened, they are harvested, steam-peeled and canned – all in the same day. They are naturally sweet, bursting with rich tomato flavor, and have a tender, meaty texture. They are the perfect ingredient for a variety of dishes, including pasta sauces, soups, stews and pizzas. Founded in 1918 by a family of Italian immigrants, Contadina set out to match the standard of quality set by products from their native Italy. Over a hundred years later, Contadina remains committed to that standard."

So why not just label it San Marzano tomatoes? Is it necessary to throw in the word style?

"Italian tomatoes grown from San Marzano seeds" - It's deceptive. They don't actually say that the tomatoes are grown in Italy thus they have to say "style". They only state that the seeds came from Italy.

Have to include "style" because unless they're grown in the small officially recognized area of Italy and have the protected designation of origin seal, they are not true San Marzano tomatoes, much like balsamic vinegar and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

I am growing them in my garden this year and they're delicious! Grown in Italy or not. Smilie

Because they aren't grown in the San Marzano region of Italy. The soil and climate are at least as important as the seeds.

I'd be curious to know how much of the can is sauce vs tomato. Apparently there is some kind of import duty classification that leads cans of Italian tomatoes to be a lot of sauce. Walmart sells Cento San Marzano tomatoes (the real kind) for something like $5 a can. But I end up straining the contents to thicken it up a bit more.

I've never found a great San Marzano STYLE can of tomatoes. But the Pomi cartons of diced tomatoes [amazon.com] are pretty decent. Sometimes I end up subbing them when making neopolitan pizzas if real San Marzano isn't available.
