If you've got a lot of spare time and have an expensive trip planned next year, you could book a very short same-day roundtrip to get companion pass for the more expensive trip. For example, if you lived in Denver, you could fly to Colorado Springs and back for $133 and then use the BOGO next year on a $500 roundtrip. Certainly wouldn't be worthwhile for everyone, but might be worth thinking about for some of you.

I was wondering the same thing, but checking the promotion rules it's clear you have to take the flight.

Per their FAQ:

Q: Does a flight I booked prior to registration count toward qualification for the Companion Pass promotion?
A: No. Qualifying flights must be booked after you register between August 28 and 11:59 p.m. CDT August 30, 2023.

I'm purchasing a round trip flight that meets the specs for this deal (book before Aug. 30th and travel before Sept. 30th)--If I can't make my flight, will the companion pass still be added? Like, do they care if you actually check-in for your flight?

Once you have the companion pass, it's only valid for flights you take during that window. No book-by date, just travel dates.

So for example, if you have a trip scheduled for 3/15-3/30, your companion pass won't work, even if you book the flight before that. The CP can only be used between 1/8 and 3/8.

This should answer your question on the FAQs:
Q: What changes to a reservation would disqualify a flight from qualifying for Promotional Companion Pass through this offer?

A: Any change to a reservation that falls outside of the promotional requirements (registration date, booking date, travel date, etc.) will disqualify the flight from this promotion. In other words, flights must be purchased and/or changed during the promotional period and the new flight(s) must be flown between August 28 and September 30, 2023 to meet the terms and conditions of this promotion.

You will want to book the primary flight as normal.... Early and cheap. You can add the companion in January.

If you're worried the flight will fill up, you can reserve a spot on the flight with points or refundable cash and then cancel the flight before you add the companion
