For beginners or budget ridders, I would recommend those basic road bikes from Bikes Direct, with Taiwan made frameset and Shimano Sora groupset or better. I don't recommend these.
Do you think people who buy these bikes are mixing and matching? It's nice trivia but I don't think it's helpful for the audience for these bikes.
I mean the bike on the link is more than DOUBLE the price. That's a lot.

i guess if your looking for a cheap first road bike its an ok bike. its nothing special probably something you would see at big box stores. only notable thing i like has double walled rims. which means if your a semi larger weight it will help so the tires dont fold. i dont like the steel forks but it is what it is at this price.

Did you look at the higher end bike on their website? Would it be worth the $70 more?

It looks like it's 60% off any model, I just checked the Acciao model.

I was a bit thrown, I know these are cheap bikes but the Aversa actually uses stem shifters, which I've only seen on the old 30+ year old used bike I bought. The Acciao uses more modern STI-style shifters where you don't have to take your hands off the handlebars to shift, which I imagine would be much more preferable to a newer cyclist (for only $26 more)

If I were looking for a cheap bike to dip my toe into riding and it had to be new, I would look at the Acciao ($26 more). The main difference I see between the Acciao and Libero is the material of the frame, steel on the cheaper one vs aluminum on the more expensive one (and the Libero has 1 more cog in the back). Steel is heavier, but some people actually prefer steel for its vibration-damping qualities vs aluminum. The difference in weight is only a stated 3 lbs (26 vs 29) so neither of these are very lightweight in road bike terms.

Friction shifters are actually simple and reliable, they go with a variety of deraileurs and cogs, no need to match specific speeds of components. They are a bit slower, but most people aren't racing, so everyday use is fine. Index shifters are like modern tech ecosystems manufactures try to lock you into, and friction shifters frees you up to mix and match.

Seems OK all-around bike, but TBH I cannot understand why companies insist on super long gearing on these...sure, 2x7 or whatever this is is "cool", but they use what seems like "standard" road-race-bike chainrings 52/39 or something yuuuge like this. The rear cassette is like 14-28T max? This is not an easy climbing gear, even for mild hilly areas (not for people looking for a <$200 bike at least).

39/28 = 1.39 ratio...sure it is "better" than SS beach cruisers & fixies, but still a bit long for people that are not like 3 watt / kilo of weight (aka non really fit cyclists that just want to communte on their bike = >99% of buyers of this.

Typical MTBs today, even something like the Schwinn Axum 1x8 does 30/40 = 0.75

Wider range MTBs & Gravel bikes are often under 0.6 ratios @ granny gears (granted, you pedal barely faster than walking @ any incline that needs this ratio).

My SS ΜΤΒ for socal is switched around 34/21~23= 1.61~1.47. (I calculated it by seeing the avg speed I maintain on loops I regular - say 11mph, then setting for that @ ~90-100 rpm, then I play up/down the rear and or the chainring)...

Expect to pedal standing a lot on a SS MTB, and I'd expect nothing different if you were to buy this to commute on even mildly hilly pavement.

This is one of the examples: https://www.bikesdirect.com/produ...on3-xv.htm. I had a 2009 version, still riding it.

If they break a component, which could be sooner than later, it'd be easy to find a replacement and get it to work with the rest, instead of hunting down what specific component would work on the rest of the cheap components. It's simple and cheap to keep a basic bike functioning, not win any races.

Steel rides nice, at $240 their disc cross bike looks pretty interesting for something to thrash.

I'm looking for a men's bike. Nothing fancy. Similar in nature and price to the ~ $50 women's Huffy bike deal from a few weeks back.
