For you, better to get it done at the dealer.

I typically spend about $25 DIY for full synthetic. It takes me less time to DIY then to drive to the shop and wait.

Well if your vehicle takes ~ 5 qts then with this deal you're paying about $13 for the oil, then probably $7 or 8 for the filter (I buy Purolator from Amazon and for my vehicles they are $8 plus they are eligible for S&S), so all in for consumables it's like $20ish. If you value your time (will basically always be quicker to DIY when you consider driving to a place then waiting), and you have the tools and space, yeah it still makes sense.

How is this good deal isn't Walmart doing 11.99 oil changes no more. Got new 2003 Corolla use bop over there cheap service
Wal Mart oil changes are in the same category as Jiffy Lube oil changes. Do you really want to risk it?

I personally know of people who have horror stories at both (forget to put plug back on, antifreeze instead of oil, caught their engine on fire (seriously), etc).

Either take to a reputable shop or do yourself for the peice of mind.

Never had an oil change @ WM, looking it up apparently they do it for ~ $25, that's the "pit crew" version. The next step up is "standard oil" (makes you wonder what kind of oil "pit crew" is). Their synthetic change is $55, which would be the most comparable to this deal, if you also bought a filter. I don't know what brand filters WM uses (fram?).

It comes down to if you care what's put in your car. If you want the most basic, cheapest type of oil and filter - looks like WM will do it for $25. If you want synthetic, they'll do it for $55. If you want to know what's going in your car and can do it yourself, along with deals like this it will probably cost on the order of $25 for oil & filter, plus your time and sweat.

As others have said, oil is cheap, engines are not. I'd personally rather do it myself and know what I am using than use a quick lube shop, that's not even saving me anything except getting dirty.

Thanks for the post OP - just stopped in to grab some.

Slightly better price in store on the two pack. $38.99 minus $8.00 instant rebate. Makes the equivalent amount $61.98.

Get OEM. filters are cheap. I buy from Toyota dealer

The Purolator filter for my hondas (they take the same filter coincidentally) is PL14610 which is $9.01 on Amazon and is eligible for S&S @ $8.56. The OE filter? Honda lists 2 different ones but they are the same price - $9.36 (15400-PLM-A02 Fram and Mahle 15400-RTA-003). The Mahle filter through Amazon is $11.50.

Without getting into some huge discussion over which filter is better, general consensus is that Fram isn't the best, and we all know OE's aren't making their own filters (of course the above tells you they aren't, but this is common sense).

Buying the Purolator version on Amazon, that I'll get in 1 day, is $0.35 cheaper than having to go to the dealer, plus it's arguably a better filter. That's all anecdotal but I'd bet it's a pretty universal thing.

Is it still worth to do your own oil change nowadays? I called a dealer near me and it's $100 for an oil change!
Yes, if anything just because dealers can't really be trusted to do the job correctly. If nothing else you could always buy the oil and filter and bring that to them. Some dealers used to just charge $5-$15 for the labor and disposal. I think an oil change for my pickup at a dealer would probably start $100-$150 for conventional nowadays. I buy oil in bulk and with rebates so I probably do an oil change for about $40 with oil & filter at the prices I bought oil with from last batch.

best place to get filter deals at the moment?
I usually get mine via Amazon or Ebay if the seller is a dealership. Also, many manufacturers have parts direct websites that Is linked to local dealers for pickup or shipment depending on how much you buy. I strictly use OEM parts,

Out of curiosity i checked my amazon order history for a Purolator filter i bought in Jan 2014. It was $6.81 at the time, and now sells for $10.89. 60% increase in price after 9 years and 7 months. I have no idea how costs for material, labor, and inflation changed over that time period, but I'm pretty sure it was not 60%.

Everyone says how easy it is to do it yourself but never mentions disposing of the used oil.
Most dumps or transfer stations take the oil but the easy way is to bring it back to the place you bought it. All the parts dealers will take and dispose of used oil. Check here for nearby transfer stations https://search.earth911.com/
