Did this exact deal for $100 first year. It was very annoying. Text and minutes ran out, and refill was a pain. At the end of the year, had to get new phone, and different plan.

IE: exactly what's needed for someone selling something on Craigslist or FB Marketplace or any other reason for wanting a "burner" so their primary number doesn't get inundated with spam.

It's really quite amazing how few spam calls there are when your phone is turned off for weeks at a time, and all texts and messages can be block deleted...

By backup phone, they mean in case your phone breaks and you need one to use while it is getting fixed. When I had to send my iphone back to apple, I was without a phone for a week and a half. How exactly is insurance going to help you with that?

Good phone for parents? Basic use like WhatsApp and YouTube watching?
Can you activate this and keep it in drawer for 60 days or does it need to be active on Tracfone network?
Can you request early network unlock if travelling overseas? TIA

Yes and Yes. I had couple of tracfones (Android) in the past which promptly received unlock eligibility SMS post 60 days of activation. Based on my experience all you have to do is visit the below unlock page by tracfone and enter the phone number or account number and other details and it will verity the eligibility and will send you the instructions via email and will also display on the webpage. If the device is going to be out of US before that 60 days period is met, you might have to manually keep track of the number of days, as i doubt whether tracfone unlock sms will reach you once you are out of US. In terms of whether you have to be inside the USA for the whole 60 days period, i am not sure as i have kept all my devices with in the country post activation until the 60 days criteria is met, beyond that no one cares. Hope it helps
