In Settings, search for "Unlock". Select the app Unlock (pink icon) near the bottom. Storage & Cache -> Clear storage -> back -> Open ( to launch app).
This created the permanent unlock option for me. Had to click this option a few times but eventually unlocked.
9/5 activation on Android 13 Jan updates. metro sim installed

__________________________
Thanks to everyone who provided suggestions. Reset, force stop, cache clear, nothing worked, with the permanent unlock option not showing up.

What coincidently worked was opening the unlock option with airplane mode on ( and wifi off as well) it the showed the error message sating cannot connect but also showed all of the various options including the permanent unlock option. Which i then clicked after turning on wifi

that too is common. a few android phones as well as iphone.

i found the main point of your post was active v inactive service.

I'm not talking Android phones in general or iPhones. I'm talking about MGS specifically. I don't recall anyone reporting an automatic unlock before.

This whole thread is about MGS and the guy I responded to literally said "My Moto G Stylus 5G 2023 unlocked automagically today (day #180) without my having to do anything.". You brought up iPhones and Android out of the blue, not me.

no doubt this thread is abt MGS.
ur post hoverer was abt what typically happens about UL automatically without interreference.
then u said that happens typically when u have active service.
u then went on to inquire if that was the case

my post was to refute that claim.
that UL happens regardless of active v inactive.
regardless of phone.(which is when the other android & iphones were introduced)
in fact 99.9999% of the folks here do not pay after the 1st month.

I wonder if this is a new procedure? In the past, you had to manually unlock the phone using unlock in settings. Anyone else have their moto stylus phone unlock automatically?

I have 3. Two unlocked manually with app. The 3 rd one need to wait another few weeks. I don't think its automatically.

You're missing my point and the reason I asked my original question. I know that Metro phones should unlock after 180 days whether you pay for 180 days of service or not. The original poster said his phone unlocked automatically. As in, he picked up his phone one morning and it changed status to "unlocked" or asked him to reboot to unlock. He didn't have to go into settings and request an unlock. That is what I'm talking about. I've never seen this reported before for MGS phones.

hmmm..i seem to remember u saying that " typically happens when u have active service"

but i see ...perhaps what u meant is ..it will automatically UL if u have active service

is that correct?

I did say that. Which was in response to arbie2 saying that his phone unlocked automatically one day without any actions on his part. And the only reason I know of for this to happen is have active service on the phone.

Now you have! My MGS 2023, without Metro service for 5 months, unlocked automagically
on day 180 without me doing anything! I.e., I did not "...have to go into settings
and manually request an unlock."
In fact, I've never even visited the Device Unlock
menu on this phone! Nor did I have to reboot the phone to unlock it.

BTW, this wasn't the first MGS that unlocked on day 180 after sitting unused in my
desk drawer for five months. But, it was the first MGS that unlocked without me
doing anything! Perhaps it unlocked automagically because it percolated on wifi
for five days prior to day 180? I have another MGS 2023 that's now occupying my
desk drawer purgatory. I'll give it five days of wifi-ness prior to day 180, and
report back in 5 months if it (or the Samsung A9+ 5G) automagically ascends
to an unlocked state on day 180.

Just curious, what was the indication that your MGS was automatically unlocked? Was there a message that popped up saying the phone had been unlocked? or when you went to Settings to CHECK its unlock status (not to REQUEST an unlock) and it already showed unlocked? I've read reports of the 2nd situation.

I've had many Metro phones and I've used them all as a wifi device before the 180 days. All the android phones required a manual unlock, so being on wifi before 180 days wasn't a reason for automatic unlock.

It was the latter, i.e., when I went to "About phone" menu to copy the phone's two IMEIs
at about 1 AM on the 180th day, it already showed unlocked. I never visited the
"Device Unlock" menu, and I never requested an unlock.

Metro Pixel 6A pops up with automatic unlock message.
