lithium-iron-phosphate recharge cycle is also at least 10X stronger than lithium nickel cobalt.
another issue with LFP battery is that the discharge voltage of LFP isn't as linear as lithium nickel cobalt. it is nearly flat for the majority of the discharge cycle. so the battery management system wouldn't know the stage of charge by reading voltages alone. for LFP battery, you need to top it to 100% once a while to re calibrate the BMS
Model S is most likely they have too many units in warehouses and they want to clear up some inventory in general, profit margin is still very high for them

this guy did a breakdown, like you said its really only necessary if you want it to have 100% accurate range estimation but its not like the battery is actually losing range.
