However, from what I've seen, these are pretty much only triggered by a substantial IR heat source (like a person). It seems to me like the cameras are basically in standby mode and not even registering visual activity until that happens. So an animal walking by at a distance or something like a tree falling, etc are unlikely to trigger it. I noticed during testing that one of my cameras tipped over at one point (unharmed) and it didn't record, even though the picture obviously changed completely. On the upside, that appears to result in pretty remarkable battery life. I've had mine going for over a month and they both still show over half charge and I haven't plugged them in at all since I placed them. They're on the front porch where they pretty much only trigger when a person walks in and out.
Also note that they may not work well if placed behind glass from the actual viewing area. I had one a foot or two behind my glass porch door looking out at one point and it didn't trigger despite a delivery person coming right up to the other side of the door completely in its view. Again, I'm thinking that's probably due to the glass obscuring the IR trigger mechanism. I put that one on the other side of the door and now it works much better.
In my opinion, these would be a great complement to an existing wired system for areas where wiring isn't really feasible. For instance, these could be placed in a tree (maybe in a little fake bird house) to watch over a shed out back or a mailbox, cars, etc. You'd want to disguise or secure them as well as possible, but they're cheap enough that it's not a huge loss if one gets stolen or broken. Also, you still have the footage even if they disappear (even without cloud storage enabled) because the SD card is in the base unit.
Also good for renters who just want something quick and easy to install without wiring for keeping an eye on who comes and goes, etc.
For me all of the detection/notification is working just fine. I get a clear picture and long battery life (unless the camera is placed in a high traffic area). I had one arrive with the threads stripped on the mount, and customer service sent me a new one (+ an additional camera for my trouble!). For continuous monitoring I agree with the wired comments, but this is great for the simple setup.
Only negative that I'd call out is that they don't seem to work with the web interface (even though I was told that they did). You have to use the app to view/playback any videos.
I just checked and the deal was still live for me.
And the LaView instructions only mention low, med, and high PIR settings for this model …
"Tap 'PIR' to adjust PIR sensitivity to 'Low' 'Medium' and 'High' level to achieve better battery life performance."
