The forthcoming TV OS 17 supports VPN [9to5mac.com] and Apple will start allowing VPN apps on its release. I don't know what VPN services will support it, but VPN will be less of a differentiator going forward.
Probably because the 128GB model with ethernet was just on sale for the same price via Costco or a price match to them.
So i've had multiple rokus over the years, 4k firesticks, and pretty much every version of apple tv. 100% apple tv is the best out of them all. The firesticks are too laggy same for the older rokus. The newer ones can be snappyish but nothing beats the apple tv for responsavieness. That said its also like double the price if not more of all of those (when not on sale) so it makes sense its better lol.

I've never ran into an app that didn't work flawlessly. Also works great with my sound bar and on every tv (I have multiple in my house) I 100% recommend these over any other "smart" tv device.

Note it will have less apps than roku/android app stores since it uses the apple app store. Means less apps but more stability.

This is a pretty good deal it's just getting thumbs down because of the $100 for the 128gb version deal (which was barely even available). That one has the Thread thing which hardly anybody uses or even understands to begin with, 64GB more of storage space you also wont use, and an ethernet port that you may or may not want. Obviously if you do need those things for whatever reason then dont get this. Otherwise it's the same device and works great for what you're going to use it for 99% of the time.

Stupid to thumbs down a deal like this imo because 1) it is a deal and 2) it discourages people from posting deals

I totally agree with you.. not sure why Costco even had the 128GB on sale, it was a not readily available anywhere including online. This is a great deal for $99

Doesn't Apple purposely design their stuff so it doesn't work well with non-Apple services?
No, but if you were more specific about what services you use someone could tell you if it works with the ATV or not.

Great deal. Been waiting for that to buy second one. Already have 2nd gen and love it!

I had every possible streaming device in the past and this is the best with Roku Ultra close second. Only reason to be on android based device would be to have VPN on the device itself but I don't have that need.

I've had many Rokus (all Ultras now) and as well as Apple TV. They both work very well and have their differences. Will always have at least one of each as it has happened to me that one stops working, connecting to the internet, starts to lag, etc. so I just switch and keep on going.

Roku has it's own channels and own discounts. Recently had MAX start doing something wacky. When I pause a show and resume it, it jumps backwards. sometimes a few minutes, sometimes an hour. Switched to the Apple TV and it's fine.

Biggest difference for me is that in the 15 second rewind, Roku will temporarily turn on the close captioning and Apple TV will not unless you ask SIRI through your Apple TV remote..what did they just say?

One thing about Thread is that it may become super needed and then you may find yourself missing out...but a Homepod mini also does that.
