4GB of soldered, apparently non-upgradeable ram. That's an insult in 2023, regardless of price point.

Thanks for commenting. Yeah it's not a gamer for sure, just a modern entry level machine (with some decent features) at a really compelling price point. Probably great for students and casual web users, and maybe light travel use. I thought it was worth posting as you don't see many new Windows laptops in this price range.

Would this be better than a Chromebook though?

This is a full blown PC, whereas a Chromebook is geared more towards web browsing. Chromebooks can be had for less, but I personally prefer Windows operating system because it can do anything you want to do with it. In a nutshell, your operating system choice will largely depend on your intended use.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

Dell Latitude refurbs go for about this much, will be much more resilient, and can have RAM upgraded (even come with at least 8GB to begin with)

A 4GB laptop is going to be slow as anything in this day in age. At this price point, it be worth it buying the $199 lenovo from Microcenter which has better specs and is $20 less, even if you had to drive 50 miles to pick it up.

I tend to agree that refurbs often offer a better value, albeit usually with older hardware specs. I actually have several Dell refurbed SFF desktops and they're awesome for the money spent. A lot of shoppers want new only, and for those folks this is a pretty sweet discount off of regular price on a new name brand laptop with factory warranty.

Depends on the chromebook. Usually not.

We are sorta in apples and oranges territory with this comparison. Smaller screen, 2 year older processor, double the RAM but at half the RAM clock speed. Larger SSD though. I don't have a Micro Center anywhere near me, but if other Slickdealers do the $199 deal you linked is definitely worth a look.

There's no MC's around here, but (IMO) nothing on store shelves should have less than 8GB of ram by now. 4GB was normal 10 years ago. It's well past time.

My main point was that buying ANY laptop running Windows 11 with only 4GB is absolutely worthless. Even the most basic basic tasks are going to be slow. From the article linked below, here is a quote: "Windows 11 Can Run on 4GB of RAM... but Barely"

This processor might be newer, but is slower than a 8th gen i5, for instance, according to notebookcheck.com. But yeah, the warranty can be a selling point, though I'd rather have a better-built computer that's less likely to need repair. Dell also has a 1-year warranty for $49, and some credit cards offer one built-in.

The one you linked would be night-and-day better. Looks like it also has a RAM slot for upgrading.

You probably need a plan for storage beyond 256GB even for light editing.
