Important info for GMRS: License is required to transmit. No test is involved, just a $35 fee to receive a callsign good for ten years. Family members in the same household are covered under one license.
Opinion: Just pay the fee. It's $3.50 a year to communicate over the air legally, even an SD'er can't squeeze pennies harder than that.

I have a ham radio license so this license is different. the license cost is $35 used to be $70 and is good for 10 years and it's good for all your family members living in the same home you will be allotted one call sign for your family. there is no test you just have to be licensed with the FCC.
Now that you went ahead and got license you'll be able to use a repeaters in your area and you'll be able to talk for miles.
YMMV on repeaters in your area ?
Nice find OP

This is NOT a deal by any means. This is the normal everyday price for a GMRS radio with these features. See links below for reference. Personally, I own and like the Baofeng UV9G linked below. The price is $38 after the 15% off coupon, but it also comes with a programming cable. It's also ip67 waterproof, which is a nice feature.
There is a good bit of consumer info on these on radioreference. I bought and returned one because of low transmit volume, but may have been able to wait for a fix via firmware ... I'll never know 8)
Just waiting for my neighbor, Angry Al to jump in here and yell at everyone, stowed away in his "HAM office" in the garage, where he "talks to his buddies" all day.

I was looking at the Baofeng, Talkpod, Radioddity, and a couple of other "budget" GMRS radios that are FCC-certified. I already have other non-certified radios that could broadcast on GMRS but that would be illegal. Even though the features are the same I felt the GM-30 had the best balance of features/performance/quality/cost. However, people should do their own research.

Yeah… that's the typical Ham radio user. The main difference between Ham radio users and GMRS radio users is this:
with Ham, the radio itself is the hobby. You spend your time scanning frequencies and trying to find people to talk to. With GMRS, the radio is used to communicate with your friends while engaging in a hobby… such as communicating with your friends while you are all hiking, off-roading, or cycling.
Bunch of old timers on our repeaters who get extremely irritated when someone talks to them without giving away his real name and home address. Plus occasionally some business steps in illegally into GMRS space - these are fun to mess with.

While you can compare them simply by features that doesn't mean that there is no merit to a more expensive radio. Radioddity has an 18 month warranty and their main point of contact is US based. They are probably more analogous to B-Tech in that regard. Spec for spec, dollar for dollar Radioddity is going to be a better choice than Baofeng based on support if nothing else. Whether or not the difference is consequential is another story.
Maybe it's naivety but I would think Radioddity would have more accountability in regards to FCC regulations and adhering to spurious emmisions standards.

Also, while this is a good price, Baofeng brand GMRS walkies are this much all the time, and they have the same features.
