I keep drooling over these NAS deals and then eventually deciding I don't actually need it for our home setup. Here I am again lol...
You install the Synology Photos app on your device, give the app permission to access your photos/videos, and set it up for automatic backup to the NAS.
I'd agree that it's probably better, depending on your definition of "better." I see the main benefit of these units being that they "just work" - it's not something you have to build and maintain, just update them regularly, Synology ensures compatibility and ease of use.

New 8 bay should be coming in December, but probably just slightly faster CPU. Not sure it will be worth waiting and paying full price.

$150 off is a good deal, thinking of getting it. Can save on tax too, although finding too many complaints since they switched to Comenity Bank so will pass on that.

Am I right that the 'plus' models are best because they have better hardware and support plex encoding etc

Plus are the better models, but this has Ryzen CPU with no iGPU so no hardware transcoding. If you have an Apple TV or something similar not an issue unless watch remotely.

Wouldn't it be cheaper/better to build an Unraid server than these? Specially for Plex?

Depends on what you're doing today to backup pictures and videos. For me, having a NAS was a game changer. Central location for all pics and videos. No cloud limits or payment plans. Able to serve local media to streaming devices. And automatically backing up all pics and videos from all cell phones in the house. Redundancy is good option and ability to automatically backup to an external is also a plus. I just found it very time consuming to store family pictures and videos on portable drives that sometimes just failed for no apparent reasons.

Can you please elaborate a bit about automatically back up all pictures and videos on cell phone? Does it work for iphone/ipad? How does it work?

We depoly these things left and right and the CPU is never an issue. However we're using them for corporate functions (backups, file server, VPN server, etc), so not sure how well they work with things like Plex or home apps.
