If you buy one of the Samsung drives, make sure to check the version of the firmware and update if necessary. There was news a while back about the 2TB 980 Pro prematurely failing due to bad firmware. The problem isn't exclusive to this model, but it seems to be the most commonly failing model. The firmware update seems to have fixed the issue. https://www.pugetsystems.com/blog...liability/
And it's $50 here. Struggling to understand what your point is.
Why do people keep saying to wait for BF? Every year, I see people on here complain about how BF deals are the worst they've ever been. What makes you think the SSD deals will be so good?

I ended up getting another NVMe SSD during 2022 BF. I can confirm, discounts at the time were nothing special. The only difference from previous sales was that WD was offering a random gift (like a T shirt) with some slightly more expensive purchases lol. I had patiently waited for a 2TB SSD for months.

Although it might be nicer to organize there is no performance benefit and potentially some issues with doing this.

These days just put in the biggest drive you can afford and install everything to C:. No use for extra partitions or a OS and a data drive. The only exception for this is servers were you might want just data on a separate partition.
I usually keep the OS and data separate so that if I need to do a clean install of windows without having to backup data to a separate device

Is this worth the extra money over the 2tb intel 670p at 65.00 ?

Im using this for steam games as a secondary drive
AFAIK from benchmarks I've seen and my own benchmarks with a variety of games, there's not much of a difference between a modest NVMe gen 3 or gen 4 SSD for gaming. Techpowerup did a lot of SSD benchmarks and found that the vast majority of popular games have fairly similar load times whether gen 3 or 4.

The only caveat here is that if the gen 4 price delta isn't much to you, it's worth considering. Direct Storage does get a slight benefit, but the adoption has been slow, and it looks to be the difference between a 1 or 2 second load from a few benchmarks I've seen (usually just for Forspoken). My dell is in the third percentile. Are dell drives like the worst thing on the planet? I'm trying to figure out if I can even upgrade it or if it's just a massively overpriced calculator an ive learned the hard way why pc nerds have insulted e-machines an Dell etc for decades?

Both.

I bought this in July for Prime Day for this price (1TB, $50) and upgraded my boot drive from a 950 500gb to the 1tb 980. Also updated my CPU so I did a clean install of Win11

It's fast as a whistle & I can have more in the default Program Files etc
Windows 11 lol. I gues I havent used windows since Steam Proton. Gone are the days of bad updates and crap reliability. Linux is the way to go for sure.

Damn, I bought 980 pro for $199 back in 2021. My computer decided to die at the worst time possible with everything so expensive.

Really good deal for a PS5 drive. Too bad the 2TB one with a heat sink is sold out.

Anyone have a recommendation for a separately sold heat sink to use with this drive in a PS5?

For maximum heat transfer on Samsung NvME SSDs.

Use a 0.5mm thermal pad over the NAND chips (the black squares closest to the end of the SSD.

Then, for the the controller chip (silver cpu looking chip closet to the connector of the SSD) and the rest of the board, use a 1.0mm thermal pad.

Doing this will allow the whole SSD board to have direct contact to the heatsink via the thermal pad without air gaps.

Why would you want a large boot drive? I thought the boot is for the OS and you use a large storage for storage
Normally, the first ssd will be the one that comes by with the laptop(or bought in the case of a assembled pc) . The second ssd that we buy after some time will be better most of the time, than the one that's provided by brand(because of price drops /technology improvement). So many prefer to use the one that we buy later to use as primary for OS.
Example:I have a dell laptop with 1tb pcie 3 ssd which doesn't even have dram. I am planning to buy 2tb 850x(my laptop supports pcie 4).Its a no brainer to use 850x as primary. I can save a little by buying slower ssd,but I can spend 20$ more to get the best and that amount is 2% of what I spent for my laptop.

Hm.... I have this in my PS5, can I remove it to update the firmware via an external enclosure without losing the PS5 data?
Firmware is saved to motherboard. Not the drive itself. You shouldn't lose data saved on drive. The issue mentioned sounds more like a clocking mismatch with motherboard that causes eventual data loss.

Is the 4tb good for a boot drive in a gaming laptop?

Edit: oh thought the 4tb was nvme too. Nope, SATA!
Sata and NVME are virtually identical for gaming and load times. Literally fractions of a second difference loading a game. 0 impact on FPS.

The only time NVME is measurably faster IRL is in large file copies, like ingesting video off a pro video camera.

Also for a laptop id suggest the Hynix PCI 3 nvme. It's perhaps the most power and heat efficient drive. PCI 4 kinda sucks in laptops currently as they use a lot more power and heat.
