Quite a sweet deal really. I have a synology 920 and I think I paid about this price for it, for one less bay and 1Gbe two years ago. But I don't feel left behind- have been hoarding all data I could think of but can't get past usage beyond 10TB even though I can store 20TB max. But I still won't call this an overkill- one extra bay means you can buy smaller storages to come up with the same RAID array. Great bargain.

Edit: DS920 4 bay is $598 not sure why would 4 bay be cheaper? I have no clue as to why.

This is not reported as being good for Plex 4K transcoding, but perhaps someone has some personal experience proving otherwise. Here's the google sheet showing NAS/Plex compatibility: https://docs.google.com/spreadshe...1274624273

Synology 17 and 21 series NAS devices are your best bet for 4K.

It's because it uses a Ryzen CPU instead of Intel. There's no hardware encoding/decoding. I'm guessing the Ryzen based models must not have been too popular because they're the ones going on sale.

Which one is better DS923+ or DS1522+ ? I don't care about Plex. Any suggestion, please? I am new to NAS and have been debating to buy it from last 5-6 months.

I have done a ton of research on this and I have come to the conclusion that DS1522+ is better.
- More RAM (8GB single slot)
- extra bay for HD
- 4X 1GB ports
- can scale to 2 more 5 bays expansion

Ryzen 5 & 7 models do 4K hardware transcoding well. Intel has some architecture that does transcoding a bit better, but simply being a Ryzen doesn't count the unit out and simply being Intel doesn't mean it transcodes well. The Xeon units are the best, however.

It's about time they started to crack down on the rampant piracy that's been going on.
I hope this is a joke. Nobody is cracking down on anything. That was a statement about the hardware configuration, not legal matters.

Intel quicksync is part of the vast majority of their processors, even the budget ones in their mini PCs. AMD doesn't package iGPUs in some of these budget processors, like this one.

So yes, on desktop processors like my 7700X this isn't a problem. On mini PCs and devices like a NAS this becomes an issue. Even the ARM chip in my Raspberry PI is better at transcoding. There's nothing wrong with low end Ryzen chips, they just shouldn't have used them in this scenario because people like to use these for media streaming.

So what would people suggest a 6-bay NAS that is simple to use and good for plex transcoding?

Google search found this post in Synology forum
https://community.synology.com/en...ost/112791

People said "use it as a redundant connection or combine them into higher speed connection."

It's for link aggregation which allows you to combine multiple ethernet links into a single logical link which help with data speed transfer.
