You really don't seem to get how this stuff works. I shoot nature, weddings, and some various sport activities as a side gig and Plex makes it easy for me to share the video before I package it onto a thumb drive so I can make sure they like the work I've done. It is beyond small minded to think people that utilize transcoding only do so for nefarious purposes.

And realistically, how is it impacting you what others are doing? If you think your price would be lower if everyone had a subscription, I have a newsflash for you.

So yes, this model not having transcoding sucks for me as a person with a side hustle. Hopefully the next models will have it.

It is called bonding. You bond the 2 interfaces together for redundancy and speed.

Intel better watch out. They might get cancelled.

This is not reported as being good for Plex 4K transcoding, but perhaps someone has some personal experience proving otherwise. Here's the google sheet showing NAS/Plex compatibility: https://docs.google.com/spreadshe...1274624273 [google.com]

Synology 17 and 21 series NAS devices are your best bet for 4K.
The spreadsheet is useful, but the advice on series 17 and 21 is not. Neither support hardware transcoding. There are numerous models from the 18 to 20 series that do, but to my understanding most of them are no longer in production and will be hard to find. These days a lot of people who want Plex transcoding and need a new system usually go for QNAP I think. I got a 1520+ (which is an x20 series, oddly) when they were closing them out. Several sites recommend the QNAP TS-464. I've never used it.

I don't understand, why do they have to be a jerk and restrict you to their own 2.5G ethernet module and memories?

Because they make their money off locking you into their ecosystem, the PSU's are proprietary and just about everything else is as well.

But you plug this in a switch, which the clients are also plugged into also, right? Or can you plug this into multiple switches? Can this be on multiple networks?

NAS plugs into a switch with two 1GB cables, two clients plug into the switch with 1GB cables. Now both clients have 1GB simultaneous access. If you plug the NAS with one network cable, all clients share the 1GB connection.

Lets just say this is the simplified version.

I have done a ton of research on this and I have come to the conclusion that DS1522+ is better.
- More RAM (8GB single slot)
- extra bay for HD
- 4X 1GB ports
- can scale to 2 more 5 bays expansion

I've owned a 1520+ for the past 2.5 years and absolutely love it but my only real drawback on the Intel model was a lack of 10 Gbe which this solves.

With SMB3 multi-channel though you can do more than 1 Gbe transfers so I'm getting about 200-300 MB/s with the 4x 1 Gbe but it does use up 4 ports on my expensive switch so the real cost savings from 10 Gbe comes from less switch ports. (Multi-gig + 10 Gbe switch ports might not be cheap).

It all depends on your use cases. I have a QNAP and a Synology box and I use them for different things. The Synology happens to be better at 4K than the QNAP, and has more apps. I think the general consensus is that the QNAP hardware is best and the Synology software is best, but it still depends on how much you spend.

Regarding if my information is helpful or not, I was only highlighting the AMD processor models, since that is what is being discussed in this thread. The spreadsheet covers any information I omitted.
