General Chromebook / Acer refurb thoughts:
I've owned or extensively used around 20 Chromebooks and Chromeboxes personally and at work
I've purchased around 10 Chromebooks from Acer refurbished store on Acer. They've all been virtually new. YMMV, but my experience has been 100% successful. Chrome OS is also exceptionally easy to powerwash and start anew.
Acer 516 thoughts:
I own this laptop -- bought it in February new for $450 + tax (Slickdeals thread here)
It's an exceptional machine, and a strong recommend from me for anyone looking for a very large, less mobile Chromebook
The screen is fantastic. I prefer 3:2 screens like on my Acer 713, but wanted a larger laptop and this 16:10 screen is bright, sharp, and very roomy
12th gen Intel + 8GB of RAM lets me do absolutely everything. I've not been able to slow it down to date (I don't use Android apps so that may be more challenging but I suspect it will do fine)
Speakers on the 713 are the worst I've ever had on any laptop and the worst part of that particular machine. Coming over from that, the speakers on the 516 are upward facing and plenty loud and clear for me.
Laptop is not a 2-in-1, does not have a tablet mode, does not have a touchscreen. I personally don't need those features but a deal breaker if you do.
This is one of the few 15"+ laptops anywhere that does not have a numberpad. A true blessing, as I am incapable of using those things with their non-centered keyboard and trackpad.
For this price it's a no brainer if you need a Chrome OS machine at this size.

I don't know why people waste money on these overpowered Chromebooks.
You could buy an old cheaper laptop and just install ChromeOS flex on it.
You will be able to buy a full function gaming laptop for $400 come Black Friday.

But yeah, in general you want upgradeable memory. If it's soldered, get as much as you see yourself needing in 5-7 years (about how long people keep laptops nowadays). All the soldered RAM laptops I've bought for family members in the last 5 years have had 16 GB.
Did they fix the memory leaks in Chrome for ChromeOS?

I bumped up my personal laptop from 16 GB to 32 GB recently - because of memory leaks in Firefox and Chrome. One of the drawbacks of running in private/incognito mode is that it doesn't retain your history, so your tabs don't reopen after restarting the app. I was getting tired of bookmarking all my open tabs, restart the browser, then re-opening all those tabs again once a week. When I noticed that an extra 16 GB of RAM was now only $30, I bought it immediately. Now both can bloat to 10+ GB without issues.

Not everyone has the same needs, but in my experience it's well worth spending an extra $50-$100 for it.
