This is exactly what has led to TI's dominance. Even as an owner of a firmware-upgraded Casio fx, I'd still primarily recommend a Casio model to a calculator enthusiast. For the average student I'd generally start with identifying the TI model appropriate to the task.

Good luck!
Jon

Still looking for a good RPN calculator to replace my worn out HP 48
I have a HP 48s emulator app on my iphone. I never had the 48s, I had the 28s. These days I just use the stack to do number crunching. I don't need to solve 10 x 10 matrices like I used to.

5th Grade here.
TI-30 is the preferred, and that, I think it's just to keep everyone on the same page.
My daughter's died while she was in 10th grade and we purchased her a Casio with no issues, but things are different in high school to middle school.
My son who just went into 8th grade has the TI-30, it's still on required school supply list.

Just get an old android, use Universal Android Debloater to remove everything and Download any Graphing Calculator App. Now you have a graphing calculator that's free and clear of any distractions.

The TI graphing calculators can also run on basically potato power without loss of computational integrity or loss of data in memory

I don't get why most calculators don't just give an option to toggle between algebraic and RPN modes. Once you learn RPN, algebraic entry feels cumbersome.

I you don't want to splurge for the HP Prime, it looks like sharp el535 might support RPN. At least it shows up in an Amazon search for RPN calculators and the equals button is also labeled as enter. It's also only $22 right now.

No. You'd want a programmable graphic calculator.

Not a Good Deal because you can get them on eBay almost everyday $7~ or 30% cheaper.

(I'm not differentiating between used and new because calculators rarely break. Casios, TIs, etc - you can pass them down generation to generation without an issue.)

FX-350ES PLUS 2 is 11bucks. Numbers at back, lower the better?
Doesn't really matter. Once you've got the basics (square, root, tangents, etc), and enter the calculator showmanship wars of ever more functions rarely or never used, it's more than powerful enough for school.

These two Casios with 250+ functions is overkill, so buy cheap.
