XPS 13 I think you're referring. That definitely is smaller, lighter and has better build and brighter display. But performance wise, this is way ahead as this has a far powerful i5-1240P vs U series i5 in that model. And 8GB Ram is a very limiting factor today, you will be limited to basic tasks only.

CPUs dont make noise... How often the fans are used, what speed, how loud the laptop is, all depends on the laptop manufacturer and model. At 30w nominal power these CPUs are easy to cool under normal use.

Processor has an average CPU mark of 17,339 on CPU Benchmark. damn that's good.

It has two m.2 user replaceable slots according to XDA. Nice.

Looking for laptop for college student mainly to be able to use excel so while nothing fancy want decent build quality. I feel like this is overkill as my HP 14-DF0023CL that I got from Costco for $300 (back in 2018) would be more than sufficient. However not sure if will find anything for $300 that is not junk so this may be best deal for light, portable, (well built?) laptop.

Bought one. Good enough for college freshman that just needs windows for Excel.

Do you know which games? I ask because if you don't, and there is a chance you'll want it to play graphics intensive games, you would want it to have a discrete graphics adapter. But if you know it will mostly be indie games or older games or maybe RTS like age of empires, then these current integrated graphics like this will do quite well. You won't be playing Call of Duty or something FPS though.

Do these come full of bloatware? Assume best to reinstall windows clean but if not needed then that is easier. Just arrived but for daughter so I wont be using it.
