Designed for modularity and upgradability, the Framework mainboard kit provides users with a small form factor and range of processor options. If you don't want certain things (power adapter, case, Ethernet networking and USB expansions) you can get the bare i5 board for $199.

Have been following Framework closely for years. Really cool concept, but a bit too expensive for 11th Gen considering you can get an entire laptop for around the same price. Still, I am happy to see them make this available.

If you have a 3d printer the board on its own is a pretty good price, especially if you have spare RAM and drive laying around. Skip the ethernet add on and use wifi, then you just need a power adapter. Granted that's a lot of ifs, but I'm tempted.

In for one! Out the door for $250+tax:
  • $200 Mainboard
  • $40 case
  • $10 USB-C card

I have my own USB-C power supply and USB-C hub, so connectivity will be taken care of that way. Some spare RAM and an old NVME drive will round out this new machine!

I don't see an option to get it without the case unfortunately.

Looks like the i5 is out of stock now but it was available by itself, and the i7 versions are still in stock here: https://frame.work/products/mainb...intel-core

Is this supposed to be a desktop kit? If so, what's the point? While I applaud Framework's efforts with notebooks, I just don't see the market for desktops. There are plenty of other options that seem equally extensible and more affordable for desktop applications. Is it chasing the SFF market? Isn't that already quite niche to begin with?
The idea is that you can recycle your old laptop motherboard when you upgrade to a newer model in the same Framework shell. They are selling this stock because they found a large quantity of motherboards that never sold in that generation. This isn't a part of their business model to sell them like this but rather an inventory snafu led to a blowout option.

The 199 version is gone. A full 11gen laptop is around 500 with ssd, ram, keyboard and screen....

That $500 laptop may or not be modular, so upgrading RAM, running it 100% off A/C power, etc. may not be feasible like it is with the Framework.

Love seeing this market being created as it did seem inevitable that Framework might use this kind of channel to dump inventory they couldn't otherwise pair with other value-added components. I may personally never buy a Framework laptop, but I'd certainly give the idea of building a small form factor system around one of their motherboards some consideration at the right price.

Just adding some actual system deals as reference:I'd further add that the typical end of year configuration for quad-core 11th generation was discounted down to around $250, especially for those built using the i3-1125G4 (arguably an i5 in all but name).

Of course, these are traditional laptops which don't easily convert to a small form factor desktop in the same way as a Framework device. At the same time, these systems include RAM, SSD, power adapter and Windows OS license for their given prices.

Good luck!
Jon

Not a deal. Retailers were clearing out Intel NUC's with 1165G7 for $300.

Pretty cool I guess but pricing is just bad considering you can get a better built and better performing Intel NUC for less. And on the low end the SFF market is just saturated with Chinese crap that cost a fraction of this and theoretically perform better.
