You might have big headaches. I recently bought a Solidigm P41 for use in an external drive and it didn't work. I tried multiple working enclosures by two different manufacturers. When the drive worked at all, it slowed my system to a crawl. Much time wasted, and when I dug into the reviews, I saw that others had the same issue, warning "Good for installation on a motherboard. No good for external enclosure". IDK why this problem would be (maybe someone could explain?), but I'd hesitate to buy Solidigm for that purpose. I did read that when and if you call Solidigm, they simply say the P41 isn't supported for that purpose.
Otherwise, I'd buy this P44 and put it in an external enclosure to clone/back-up a fast 4.0 gen drive I have in a laptop.

Probably overkill unless you have Thunderbolt 3/4 and enclosure that supports high transfer speeds to match what drive is capable of. Look up which enclosure you want to use first and then match it's max speed otherwise you'll be paying extra for benefits you can't take advantage of.

Short answer, yes! You can enclose this NVME drive for less than you can purchase a portable SSD drive of the same or similar capacity. And too this will be much faster than the typical SATA to USB interface found on most portable SSD drives.

This is a pretty darn good deal. The solidigm p44 pro is essentially a slightly tweaked and rebranded version of the sk hynix platinum p41. Solidigm is the result of sk hynix acquiring Intel's old ssd division, so even though it's a somewhat newer name they're still highly credible and have good software support.
The p44 pro is on par to slightly better than the extremely popular wd sn850x by most metrics, and slightly worse than the samsung 990 pro. The differences in performance are fairly negligible in real world use though. The p44 pro is also extremely power efficient, so it's a good choice for laptops and other uses where power draw and thermals are important.
At $100 I don't think it quite beats the previous $90 wd sn850x deal when you factor in the cashback that was available for the sn850x deal, but it's not too far off.

This is a high end gen 4 ssd, and will almost certainly be overkill for any standard external enclosure. Unless you're getting a high end thunderbolt 4 enclosure, or plan on eventually shifting this drive to be used internally in a different system, I highly recommend getting a cheaper drive. The p41 plus is Solidigms' successor to the Intel 670p, and while it's performance is somewhat more middling, it is a highly reliable drive with more than sufficient performance for standard use in an external enclosure.

Yep. It would work for PS5 even if the speed were 2500MB/s as long as it is a Gen 4 interface.

The 5500MB/s speed is a recommendation by Sony, not a requirement.

this vs the crucial deal that was here a few days ago from amazon for $88? Am I missing something, because that drive is still at $100 at amazon? So what gives that this is regarded better than a known old company like Crucial where I have never had a memory component I bought from them fail on me? We are talking about someone that has been purchasing memory from them for 20+ years

Please enlighten me

Lol, the answer is simpler than it may appear. It's all about the performance numbers vs the pricing numbers. Maximum performance bang for the buck. This drive comes in second place only beaten by the Samsung 990 pro 2TB drive. When you want the very best overall performance, this and the Samsung are the top 2 options. I just bought one of these myself. Cheers 🍻

While they may be different from spec or price, you will not be able to tell ANY difference in your daily use. I would pay more attention to warranty and customer service. IMO I would go with Crucial.

I went with the P5 Plus deal since it was so cheap and I missed the WD SN850X deal. The drive didn't come with a heatsink and it definitely ran warm at idle and hot at load (50C and 75C respectively) causing it to throttle. I added a heatsink and it improved the temps across the board, while helping maintain its top end speed. BUT... since my mobo is PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 is already here, I wanted to max out as much as possible while keeping temps down, and this P44 Pro deal came up so I'm giving it a shot as the value-to-speed proposition is enticing.

As far as the company goes, the company is basically Intel's old SSD arm that got sold off to SK hynix, which is a pretty well known memory manufacturer. So however you feel about that company will determine your comfort level with this product and company.
