Read the one star reviews on the Harbor Freight and you will know. I bought this Fluke on the Prime Day deal after reading reviews on literally dozens of models, and there is a wide range of quality, even among the name brands. In my mind, when dealing with something potentially dangerous, price should not be the primary factor in the decision.
I don't have the harbor freight one, but a craftsman, but even if it was Fluke brand, I would still test it on a known live circuit.
It's a "simple device" where a flaw/failure could threaten your life. Not necessarily something you want the cheapest possible option for. Better to trust a reputable brand than one whose warranty is a revolving door of replacements lol

Got one of these for free years ago. Melted it by accident by leaving it in a container with some leaky solvent.... still my best and most reliable hot stick.

Fluke is definitely the leader, but how does it compare to say a harbor freight one for like 8 bucks?

Still seems pricey when it's such a simple device.

It have 60 one star out of 3055 total with an average of 4.5 stars

most of the 1 star reviews are "the button broke" and "probably a defect"

seems still like a solid bet for someone who seldom uses it to replace 120v outlets and switches
They're usually on sale for 2.99 at my location so I could buy a few to lose around the house and still be ahead

Plus if its not like i dont have a decent voltmeter lol

"Probably a defect" is not something I want to hear when working with electricity, but feel free to take your chances. Especially when the second-posted one star review says "NO response when inserted in socket."
