Perhaps the point is comfort and easy grip, not compactness? Some people don't like the smaller camera bodies as much. Or maybe it's to mimic the DSLR bodies to maintain familiarity for people switching.
Yep. This. As a professional photographer who shoots weddings, I had increased hand-fatigue when I switched from DSLR to mirrorless. Sometimes, I pick up the 5Dmk4 and it still feels nicer with bigger lens than my R5. I'd also imagine that with the extra space on mirrorless, they can pack more tech in it instead of making it much smaller. But then you get overheating challenges on video, haha.

How did Canon manage to make even a mirrorless look bulky?
You're probably a little off the mark on what groups of people want. Compactness is surely what the average consumer wants but more advanced users want a more comfortable grip, better layout and easier to access options. Smaller and lighter actually leads to MORE fatigue if you have trouble accessing the menus and the buttons are really small.

In yesteryear, the more advanced SLRs were always much larger and heavier than the intro-level.

Man, I dont know.... having to re-get all my glass is a pain. After being with the Sony a7r series for so long, I feel like I'd go through a lot of cash just to switch back to canon.
I wouldn't do it. Canon doesn't offer anything better over Sony other than a bit better ergonomics for larger hands and slightly better construction, but you will give up higher resolution, best in class autofocus, and access to the best third party lenses among other things.

Color science means nothing nowadays, it's a myth. You can make your pictures look the way you like it, no matter what camera/lens you're using.
If you shoot jpeg+raw , color sci matters. lifeless Sony jpeg takes alot of time to match Canon.

Even with RAW theres small differences in exposure metering. Older Canon used have DR/ISO issues, Old Sony Color issues and weird artifacts.

The current RAWs from 3 brands are 80 to 95% similar. Not 99%

Just like Canon color science is all. I've never been able to get the skin tones to match my old 5Dmk3 (stolen, sadly) even after a lot of lightroom and photoshop filtering... My A7R3 is serviceable and does the job I need, but everytime I sit and edit pictures I always say "My canon would have had better tones here" lol. Minor problem to have, but still. I still have all my L glass from canon hoping to go back one day, but with this system, the lenses would then need adapters and thats just more bulk than I want to deal with. So new lenses then too, it's just too expensive. I'll stick to the Sony for now I guess since I already have the glass for it and it does what I need.... those canon colors though, so nice.
why didn't you get another 5D? Theres so much insane deals on DSLR canon and nikon

Sony color sci sucks and does take more time to get it right.

Isn't Sony releasing a new body? Why switch, unless there's a big feature only Canon has?

I have Canon DSLR glass, so I could use an adapter. But switching mirrorless to mirrorless might not make sense for everybody. Though... at $3k, it's mostly targeted at the pros that have more money to switch systems.
Its the youtube review effect. They hyping people to switch to sony, then back to canon in 2-3 years. Getty just went all in for Sony, there was nothing wrong with sticking to Canon

REALLY tempting but since I don't need it RIGHT NOW, I can wait for the announcement of the MK II and then take advantage of a new lower used/refurb/new sale price in a few months.
I'm with ya. This is a great deal, but I don't "need" it today. So knowing that the new one is just around the corner, I'm betting I can save more dough when it's the old hotness.

Any expectation or anticipation on when the R5 Mkii will release? Like what quarter? This is tempting but I'd haye to buy it now only to have the new version released shortly after and could have purchased the newest version or this one at a discount

IMO, the R5 would give the edge over R6 Mk II. I have the R6 and bought it for $2,500 last year. It's been great, but at a few hundred more than the original price of the R6, I'd step up to the R5.

If not needing the battery grip, could always sell it on Fred Miranda or eBay and make back a little...but I love my battery grip as I've had a 180 kid league photographed over 6 hours and the 2 batteries in the grip lasted the entire duration.
In comparing features, the R5 series is batter in all aspects - which for me was the exact reason why I went with the R6.
As a professional photographer, practicality was my deciding factor not to pick the R5 - I never had the need to have images over 50mb files, and the idea of backing all those up. Buying a CFexpress card and card reader - I have experienced more than 2 occasion of a fellow photographer not able to edit on site because he forgot to bring his CFexpress reader, or the one he got is faulty. Another instant is buying one in emergency - something where an SD card shines.
Anyway, the R5 is a beautiful camera - just not for me. Maybe one day -

YouTube effect is crazy I think that's what's driving all of these camera releases. I'm all for innovation but it's becoming so fragmented, especially with Sony it's like they are releasing a new camera every few months.

I can't pay $3100 for a 3 year old camera especially when a new one is around the corner. I'd rather wait. The R5 hotshoe is garbage and will get loose if you put a flash on it. I don't use a battery grip so that being included doesn't entice me. Also, the joystick on the battery grip is in a terrible location.

I agree, when I bought my R6, I didn't need the photo size and had a bunch of SD cards and didn't need to invest in a new storage media. The R6 has been great for me for the past year. With these price reductions though, it's hard not to have the R5 for a little extra fun (if coming from a 5d mkIV and asked have the media cards).
