10w Eco-worthy
- Like almost all others, it allows for charging via batter terminal clamps or 12v socket/cigarette lighter. I have a 2013 Infiniti and 2010 Mazda at home. As expected, neither can use the 12v as it's off when the car's off. I believe this is the case for nearly all modern cars besides a few exceptions
- Parts are low quality. Cables and clamps are pretty bad compared to other clamps I have and just barely fit on the terminals for both cars.
- Cable is a bit short and just barely suits my use case
- Does charge reasonably well when there's enough sunlight
- Overall: 2/5, just barely gets the job done
3.5w Coleman
- The main reason to buy this is because it's one of the very few options available with OBDII cable, which does work in many cars, unlike the 12v socket. This alone is a major plus since connecting via battery clamps all the time is a hassle unless you have a convenient, private spot with excellent sunlight where you'll leave the car for a long time.
- As expected, 3.5w doesn't provide much of a charge. This one just maintains. The voltage just barely exceeds starting voltage if left out in perfect, sunny conditions for ~3 days.
- Pretty good quality materials. Cables and suction cup are good.
- Overall: 3.5/5
I do a lot of car maintenance myself and am used to popping my hood, but I suspect many people will find the battery terminal clamp option a bit annoying. The best way I've found to do this is to connect to battery clamps, run the cable through the front of the hood (there's a small gap all along the front in both of my cars), looped through the closest front window, with the solar panel itself attached via suction cups to the windshield inside the car.
I think if you have a very weak battery, and you don't get much sunlight due to your area or because it's winter, the standard solar trickle chargers won't do much for you unless you buy a fairly large one. My cars both have 3 year old batteries that are pretty worn out. They've held up fine over the summer, but I'll likely need to replace one or both batteries this winter. I'd bet that if I use a trickle charger with a new battery, it'd extend the life of the battery more though.
