I hate this practice that airlines are doing where they charge you to assign a seat. Sure it's 28,000 miles, but it's 54,000 if you want an assigned seat in the main cabin.

What, you don't like to be middle seat of row 28 for 9 hours?

I've been shopping London and Paris fares lately and have seen $550-$650 pretty regularly for fall and spring. Every single time I try to use miles for Delta and AA, it ends up being a lot of fees for very little, and we end up paying cash.

Racked up Delta miles since '98 and still hasn't made sense to redeem any

LAX-LHR November 2-9 were the examples I was pulling. There are examples of the availability I'm seeing in the post images.

Great deal with miles. It gets really expensive if I have to buy miles to book a ticket with these deals.

check out November 2-9 MSP-LHR. I'm seeing 44k miles roundtrip. Other days are in the 160,000+ range, so that 44k is a steal of a deal for London on a non-stop flight. If you have the Delta card, it drops to about 36k plus taxes

I believe they all have a spending requirement. so you'd need to spend $3k in 3 months (or whatever the exact terms are) before you get the miles. And then, they say it may take a bit to deposit them into your account (although it's usually quick I think), so I wouldn't try it...

Last month we did mlb-edi for 69k miles on dl. Peak summer travel time. tpa was only 64k and mco was 140k same dates. Fees are taxes which you have to pay regardless. Tax into edi was $161.

True, but at least taxes and fees get rolled into the cash price for easier comparison.

Did you have to go MLB-ATL-LHR-EDI, or has Delta officially started nonstops to EDI from ATL? I know they have a nonstop to MAN via Virgin but that's as close as you could get to Scotland without another connection. We did BHM-LHR in the spring for about $650 BE, $800 main.

Piggybacking onto your point, searching some secondary airports can really cut down the cost. Our trips from BHM (when connecting thru ATL) are often 2/3 the cost of an ATL-origin flight. It's crazy to get a discount for convenience, but always worthwhile to search outside of the major airports just to see what comes up.
