I hate this practice that airlines are doing where they charge you to assign a seat. Sure it's 28,000 miles, but it's 54,000 if you want an assigned seat in the main cabin.

I've been shopping London and Paris fares lately and have seen $550-$650 pretty regularly for fall and spring. Every single time I try to use miles for Delta and AA, it ends up being a lot of fees for very little, and we end up paying cash.

Racked up Delta miles since '98 and still hasn't made sense to redeem any

1 cent per mile. I use cash if the cost for a flight is at that or lower. I'll use miles if the cash cost is significantly higher. For example, I looked at an East coast flight earlier this year. With cash it was let's say $300. With miles it was 18,000 plus tax ($10), which made the flight the equivalent cost of $190 (about 1.6 cents per mile).
That's for sure how you should think of miles redemption. That makes this deal under $300 (plus tax) for roundtrip to London. Cash ticket for the same dates are $1000+

LHR is a slot airport and these are obviously non peak times but makes me feel like my SkyPesos are a better deal.

London has very high airport fees, it's called "Sock it to the tourist".

You can fly from other airports in Europe, and the fees will be lower - often much lower.
Yes, especially meaningful if paying with points.

My point was that, oddly enough, LHR has been by far the cheapest European airport (cash) of all for our Spring trip as well as into next year. I don't want to go back again that soon, but using it as a launch point for the Chunnel (or even intra-Europe flights) is pretty competitive vs flying directly to the continent now.

Historically MAD was the cheapest and LHR was toward the upper end. The strong dollar to pound is likely part of it.

I finally found a use: I'm getting flown from DC to Seattle for work and went to comfort+ for 10,000 miles.

If anyone booked the basic economy rate, curious what the fee is to choose seats after the fact? Up front they want to roll it into an additional 20k miles or so... ugh.

London and Paris have some of the highest airport fees in the world, which miles/points will never cover. Highly recommend you check other airports like FCO, FRA, AMS, MAD, and BCN.

Best I could find was 42,000. from Atlanta
Still a good deal.

But, if I add my local airport as a domestic to ATL from TLH it sure drops to 28,000. That's some deal. How can it be cheaper with the addition of a domestic flight?

Is that round ticket or one way? How much are the airport fees?

Wouldn't that depend on your destination? So great, you save $150 by flying in to Frankfurt. Then you spend $150 and waste 4 hours on a train getting to your other destination.

With no mileage credit and no seat assignment the RT fare is 434 ...So divided in two its 217...so you are saving $15 if you use 28K in points.

I see some for 29K from BOS. Wish I could found less than week duration though.
