I actually called in to cancel my mobile service because it would not let me do it online and they could not successfully port any numbers I was trying to bring after 3 weeks. They cancelled my INTERNET, and left my mobile active, even after I specifically said "I want to be clear, I do NOT want to cancel my internet services." and verbally confirmed that with them twice. It was an absolute joke.

I am not taking the chance and plan to port out the number and port it back in. I have had some porting issues in the past with XM but if they get all the numbers right and the passwords and stuff it works pretty well. Just make sure you have the customer service rep triple check as they are not very good at data entry.
Think about it this way. porting is something they do every day 1000s of times. moving eSims and converting sim to esim and not screwing things up is not something the typical customer service rep will have ever done.
This is possible; Easier if both phones support eSIM, a little more effort if the older phone doesn't support eSIM.
More difficult case :
Assuming you have a different phone number 1 currently on existing phone A that DOESN'T support eSIM (say a Moto G Play or such bought from XM themselves)
You add phone number 2 on new phone B (buying the iPhone 15) and activated on eSIM.
When you get the iPhone 15 : Go into any Xfinity mobile store. Tell them you want to swap the phones i.e. You want Phone number 1 on the iPhone 15 (convert pSIM to eSIM) and phone number 2 on the phone A (Moto G Play).
They will give you a new sim for the Moto G play that is activated with the new phone number; then transfer the eSIM of number 1 on the iPhone 15.
In this case you HAVE to go into the store because you need a new sim.
Easier case : If both phones have eSIM (say you have an existing iPhone 13 or 14 or a Pixel 6 / 7 series) - you can still go into store to get the swap done; OR can have it done chatting with CS online (web chat or over phone).
I have done both these in the past (not with iPhone 15; with iPhone 13 on eSIM and Moto G series / S22).
