Existing is fine, the important step is to be fully logged out, navigate directly to the product without being logged in, add 4x to cart while being logged out. Then log in as existing.

Uh, another strange thing happened. After "replacing" the same 1 item that was in my cart earlier with 4 new items, removing the additional 3 items results in "$-20.01". I'm not brave enough to click "place order".
