I have a Harbor Freight really close to the new house I just moved to and I have literally never been in one of the stores. Do people like the store better than Lowes or Home Depot?

Sure there will be better opinions but HF was somewhat the 'Amazon of tools'. Different now, higher prices. Most HF items you can get on Amazon, maybe even cheaper/better. Depending on your situation they may be a budget option with considering. Lowes & HD is for name brand tools along with other materials/services.

I think that Harbor Freight's value proposition has been eroding over the past few years. It's a combination of "XX% off any single item" coupons being less common, HF's prices going up, and competitors like Amazon and Home Depot squeezing the budget segment.

HD has Husky, Ryobi, Ridgid, etc. that all compete pretty well with HF's brands pretty well on price and performance, and offer much better warranties doing it.

With the welding equipment, there's some gems like the Titanium 225 stick welder. But a lot of the Vulcan equipment is overpriced (and has gone up a lot over the past few years), especially considering you can get comparable units from PrimeWeld and AHP for less money, and they come with better accessories (clamps, cables, etc.) and a 3 year warranty compared to HF's 90 days on the Vulcan stuff.

Amazon has a good selection and pretty good prices on brand name stuff too, which is typically better than the stuff sold at HF.

That isn't to say there aren't good buys still at HF. The Predator engines still pack a lot of value. I was hoping those would be included in this sale like usual because I need a new engine for my kids' go kart. The Daytona floor jacks and jack stands are really good as well.

Hand tools are typically a safe bet as they have lifetime warranties as long as you didn't do something ridiculous- think hanging a 6 foot cheater bar off a ratchet. I've only broken one hand tool, a super cheap ratchet that came in a set with sockets. I'm sure it cost under $10 and wasn't up to the task. It was a starter set and made me realize I needed to upgrade to something more substantial.

Personally, I'd avoid the jack stands just because of all the recalls. And I prefer not to buy anything electric there as the warranty sucks- 90 days. They offer extended warranties on items, but at that point you're almost at the price point of other options a lot of the time. In my mind it is best for the tool you need to use once or a handful of times and don't want to shell out extremely high prices for the quality tool.

HF is all about the coupons. Sign up for the email list and keep an eye out for deals like the ones in this thread. You'll often walk out with free stuff (buckets, measuring tapes, other consumables, sometimes with no purchase necessary), and if you keep an eye on items you're interested in you'll often find coupons in your inbox for them that cycle from time to time. A lot of the coupons stack, too, so if you play your cards right you can save big.

Quality is OK, so don't expect much, but if I'm looking for a special tool that gets used once every blue moon, or if it's something I don't necessarily need to splurge on (plastic shelves for example) I check HF first.

Twenty five years ago, HF was a quality crapshoot. The goods had all kinds of quality flaws, but could be serviceable.

As the China made goods revolution swept up the American consumer markets, quality steadily improved over the years, and HF prices remained relatively low.

Ten+ years ago, HF was still the go to place for a tool you only needed once or weren't going to make hard, everyday demands of. Quality was generally acceptable for casual use. Some of the power tools, like drill presses, dust collectors, represented good value alternatives to American branded items. Also for certain types of building supplies like cheap paint brushes, bulk/assorted fastener packs, safety glasses, among many other things.

A few things happened since then.

HF started to try moving up the quality food chain, borrowing the brand marketing playbook from American manufacturers. The introduced a set of tiered, good/better/best brands. For example, their welders were originally sold under the Chicago Electric brand. Now they also have Titanium (better), and Vulcan (best), priced accordingly.

Same with hand tools, and battery powered tools. The quality of the new brands is similar to the quality of typical consumer brands at places like Lowes, Ace, HD, etc.

With those changes came higher prices. Plus the trade war tariffs that impacted a lot of imports. Plus inflation.

Some bargains still exist, but they are now much more specific. Can't get a furniture dolly any cheaper at retail than HF. Used to be true for ratchet straps, but Home Depot now has a better set for similar money.

If you need a tool HF carries, read the reviews, check for coupons, and compare to what you would buy from the American big box stores.

This is exactly what I've experienced over the years.
And still, I see the exact same products with a different label on it that are significantly cheaper at HF than home depot. Add a coupon or get it when it's on sale and it's still a LOT cheaper.
And yes, sign up to be spammed to death with their emailings and just have it go into a folder automatically. I can't tell you how many free led lights I've collected over the years. I've used them as door stops even.lol

My shot answer - HF got overpriced in the past 3 years, while HD, L, Amazon, WM, DTO have had sales for better quality items . I stopped going to HF due to higher prices, but ordered from Amazon if in needs , or other local stores for rare sockets. I expect HF to lower prices in the next 6 months, or they loose remaining buyers...

I feel the same and only shop there for convenience now. If I can wait for Amazon or others to ship then that is my choice for lower price and sometimes better quality. Like someone already mentioned the AHP welders! There tool chest popularity seems to have pushed them over the edge and they offer way less incentives via coupons now.

If an item already has a member-only deal price, can you still apply the coupon for that item? Because when you click on a coupon and then the next page lists all the items that coupon would apply to, some of those items have a itc member-only price. For example, on the BADLAND winch coupon, if you click on it, the next page will have a Badland ZXR 12000lb winch that is selling for $299.99 for ITC member-only. So will the 20% ITC member coupon apply?
