Quick math assuming you are ok with Visible/Mint at $30/mo - overpaying by $45/mo for 36=$1620, that's what you are paying for the "free iphone".
I have an unlocked phone & pay $20 per month for service. Can't be happier.

I have never seen anything cheaper. All these ATT, Verizon, TMobile deals have $50-$75 plans which just destroy the whole deal.
I had iphone 13 pro bought via trade in. Still 7 months remaining payment and trade in credit.
Agent was able to give me pay off promo for the remaining balance ($280 ish) + waived upgrade fee $35. My current iphone 13 trade in value is $830 for upgrade. I know i will get stuck with them another 36mo but i never switched provider last 5 yr+ switch is not easy with even grandma in the family plan.
I am overall very satisfied with the promo i got. They never offered me this much credit for upgrades. Finally ordered 15 pro max 256g.
How is Verizon
Think of how many ppl paid for 2mo of service (because first was free) and got $350ish of value from the $200gc and the AirPods, then left. High cost of customer acquisition and then leave after 2 months, not very good on their balance sheets tbh.
If they start Bill credits, it's over š
The ashole rep signed me up for wrong devices with wrong service fee and they dont give a printout and say they can only send purchase agreement. Once I realized he did all shit after taking a printout and read and went back to store. he wont be able to cancel (within 30mins), asked to call customer service and deal it myself. Csr couldnt do anything but asked me to wait to get phones in mail and send it back.
Here I am after 30 days and 2 times an hour call in last two weeks, still not cancelled the lines that were returned on same day and still getting charged for this month too. Reps tells me att will refund but it is al waste of time. Atleast couple years back, the last time when costco employee signed me up for tmobile, he was clear and upfront on any charges. But then T mobile screwed me up.
I went to apple store, changed screen. I will just stick with buying unlocked direct with apple or android and prepaid like visible. say fk off on att/post paid ever.
Just my experience. Ymmv.

It saves us $110 a month which is equivalent to us buying a new phone every two years outright and trading our old phones into Apple to pay for part of the upgrade, and still having a couple of hundred $ left in our pockets.
Plus we can use the extra money to pay for streaming services we actually use rather than Disney+ and ESPN+ which we never used.
