closing an account doesn't automatically hurt your credit score. this is particularly true if the account is younger. if all your other accounts are much older, closing it could even result in a boost for your credit score as your average account age would go up.
Credit utilization would immediately increase upon the account close and this is valued just higher than credit history. Unless you specifically calculated it to a tee, it's quite likely that the score went down before it went up.
For capital one card holders, where do you use your points mostly? I see the value on their travel portal is $1, so it's less than Chase reserved($1.5). If none of the travel partners are useful to you to transfer the points, is there anything else the points are more useful that I am missing? Thank you

I'm thinking of redeeming for cash and taking out a Chase for travel next year

Award flights are the best use of points when transferring to partners which is the same for Chase/Amex. You just need to find one of the airlines within the partner program that works for you.
As an example, I used 84k amex points (30% bonus) to British Airways to book a flight on JAL to Japan next year. Economy going then Prem Economy coming back. Using points in the Amex portal would have cost 165k points for Economy both ways at 0.01 per point.

I am looking for my first "travel" card and am planning to do multiple trips solely to Indonesia from DFW/Houston airport is this card a good choice?
Yes, with the 300 credit when you book in via their portal and the 10k miles every anniversary year, you're basically getting paid 5 bucks to keep the card. Worth it if you just travel once a year.
Is that an all inclusive list of what they will approve you for? I have good credit going back decades, over 800 score and they are only saying I will be approved for three crappy cards that offer no sign up bonuses.
Also tried by wife, who is also 800+ and she got the same three cards. Ran my mom who is close to 800 and same thing.
