Is it worth the 395 annual fee? Even the APR is pretty awful.
"
Interest Rates and Interest Charges
Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for Purchases and Transfers 21.99%, 25.99% or 28.99%, based on your creditworthiness.
This APR will vary with the market based on the Prime Rate."
Is that an all inclusive list of what they will approve you for? I have good credit going back decades, over 800 score and they are only saying I will be approved for three crappy cards that offer no sign up bonuses.
Also tried by wife, who is also 800+ and she got the same three cards. Ran my mom who is close to 800 and same thing.
Per @swimsnoon: "Wow! The first card I am ever declined, and the funny thing is the card shows under pre-approval! "
When i tried I got: We are sorry...We weren't able to complete your request at this time. Rest assuredāyour credit score wasn't impacted. While we get our pre-approval tool back up and running, feel free to explore our whole suite of cards.
Have 800+ score but don't want to waste a credit pull.
Credit utilization would immediately increase upon the account close and this is valued just higher than credit history. Unless you specifically calculated it to a tee, it's quite likely that the score went down before it went up.
Not everyone carries a balance. Assuming you have the card for just one year, I'd argue the other way and say most likely credit score goes up. I churn cards quite a bit and everytime I cancel a card I usually see a small lift in my score. For a few months last year my score sat at 850 fico. Opening and closing cards really doesn't impact your score like most think.

The key point here is that you churn cards quite a bit and likely have many open. If you have an established history with many data points, of course closing one may not have a strong effect on lowering your overall score.
Closing an account will:
Remove that line of credit from your overall credit total (thereby increasing utilization)
Remove that history of payments made and lifespan of the card (decreasing or increasing avg. account history, as you said)
Potentially reduce "Credit Mix"
For most people that's enough to do some serious damage.
Thanks for this. I checked through here, got message: "Your credit qualifies you for Venture X Rewards." and it offered to complete the application which was for 75K.
Went to the 90k link from this deal & was approved.
Careful with this.
The $300 travel credit may sound impressive, but you have to use it by booking with their third party travel agency.
Anyone who has traveled a lot knows that this is just asking for trouble!
If there are any flight irregularities, you're generally screwed, because the airline basically tells you to GFY and deal with the travel agency where you bought the ticket, and the travel agency reps in who-knows-where are often just not empowered to actually help you rebook.
And for third party hotel bookings, they're a bit less risky, but you also generally forfeit any hotel points and status benefits.
So in the end, friends generally don't let friends book travel with agencies, making this card not that great of a deal unfortunately.
Used the pre-approval tool and got denied, I think because I already applied for the regular Venture back in July.

Same! Dang it!
I just called Capital One and they refused to match the offer because it's not advertised on their website. Is the offer from a 3rd party?

Worth every $395.

What cards can you downgrade to later if I find I cannot justify the annual fee?
