These go on sale regularly. I'd wait for a deal on a new unit and grab an extended warranty. Great unit but my first one was shot after a year.

I rarely have issues with mechanical products- combination of luck and taking care of what I have. But two of these Midea
UShaped ac units failed. This combined with woot - I give it a thumbs down. I hope fellow slickdealers listen.
That being said- the 10 year $99 AC units won't quit-

Refurbished. New ones were cheaper if you can find one or wait.

12000 BTU were 289 at Costco. Selected locations.

8000 BTU were 249 at both Home Depot & Amazon a week ago. Price may drop later again.

More like corporate greed.

You do understand that the EPA keeps changing what Freon is allowed to be used these days and that has dramatically increased our HVAC costs because shops etc have to retool. Peace

Does it really happen faster than the reasonable retool pace? I am skeptical that it had singlehandedly caused dramatic cost increases. You can blame EPA for all the price increases you see around, but that does not make it so. The Martin Shkreli syndrome is a much likelier explanation.

We have the 8000 and love it! Very quiet and works well. However, it's 55 pounds and kind of a lot for us to lift into place, but we managed. The 12000 is *71* pounds, and far too heavy for us. Just something to keep in mind when you're comparing specs.

3 summers here in Ne Ohio with the Danby 8k btu rebranded model. Exact same thing even both apps work.

Very happy with mine yes it does pool water by design. I have it in the upper room of a cape cod house tons of hot roof right overhead and hot knee walls. It definitely puts out much more than prev. 6k btu model I had. Way quieter and love the inverter speed changing compressor

it can be the 2k btu I need on a cloudy day pulling 99watts. and boost up to full power on a sunny day.. all without cycling on and off.

Yes it does. I just found out yesterday as I started to take down my units to clean and I splashed water all over the place... Basically the back bottom of the unit has a lip. The water accumulates up to the lip. Now I'm sure it evaporates over time but that's unacceptable to me. It caused slight rust/corrosion on one unit, mold in another. It's simply enough to clean out the mold but it's super disappointing.

Drilling a hole is pretty easy though. I did 3 per unit. My goal was to drill as far back towards the curve of the lip as possible as that would be the lowest point in a tilt but there are a lot of obstacles which made me push in the holes.

Still, after 1 year it's a fantastic window unit. Let's see how it holds up over the years.
This is done intentionally to increase efficiency. If you look good, the outside fan has a ring around it that sits in this water and it picks up the residual water and "sprays" it on the condenser to help with heat extraction, temperature, pressure, etc. It's been a very long time since i seen a window unit with a drain hole in it. Although i do have a 5-yr old LG with a grommet you can remove to drain the water if you chose to. But i assume it was installed for maintenance, not intended to ran without it long term.

Mine pooled water in the back and then started rusting. It was out in direct sunlight. I tried tilting it as well the second year, but it didn't help much. Eventually the coils rusted and when I went to turn it on during the second year of owning it, it had sprung a leak and no longer cools. It was definately very quiet and worked well when it worked, but it didnt last long. My portable Insignia brand AC worked for 6 yeras before going bad.

That's pretty unlucky/uncommon. Have you had rust issues with any other outside units? Are you in a coastal area?

Got a 8000 btu from midea and installed it myself and loving it. Very quiet and can set it on a schedule with the midea app.

Take the 11 degree angle thing seriously when installing and err on the side of tipping out, otherwise you'll hit some of the water-related issues folks report.

I have three and two had this issue due to the install.

Man I paid a lot more during summer of 2021. 2 years in, no problems yet, fingers crossed. I have 2 12k BTU models. Anyone who has had window AC will appreciate the quietness of these units.

Would love to see a smaller/lighter 5000 BTU unit someday!

I dunno man. I think the retooling isn't necessarily in the servicing or manufacture of systems because all AC systems essentially work the same. You would just need to make sure you're not cross contaminating refrigerants.

I work on cars. The whole auto industry has been changing from a refrigerant called r134a to a refrigerant called r1234yf for like the past 10 years. Most vehicles on the road still have 134a in them. You can buy 134a at the auto parts store for about 15 bucks a 12oz can right now, or you can get a 10 dollar can at Walmart. Walmart doesn't even have 1234yf, you can only get it at the auto parts store but it's like 60-70 bucks for a 12oz can.

I've looked in to why r1234yf is so expensive. From why I'm reading it's because it's more complex to manufacture, there's not generic brands out there either like there is for 134a. Now I guess you can read into this how you want, but I think it takes time for the price to come down, as it becomes more prevalent in cars I think we'll see more people manufacture it and the price come down. I think we'll also see the price for 134a rise as the price of 1234yf comes down, because it's what happened when r12 was phased out.

Just kidding! It's all a conspiracy by big refrigerant!

Honest Mike has a video on drilling a hole for the water and a followup 2 years later. (Followup video linked)
