I rarely have issues with mechanical products- combination of luck and taking care of what I have. But two of these Midea
UShaped ac units failed. This combined with woot - I give it a thumbs down. I hope fellow slickdealers listen.
That being said- the 10 year $99 AC units won't quit-

Does it really happen faster than the reasonable retool pace? I am skeptical that it had singlehandedly caused dramatic cost increases. You can blame EPA for all the price increases you see around, but that does not make it so. The Martin Shkreli syndrome is a much likelier explanation.
Its all the greedy contractors trying to take advantage.
I've installed 3 Central AC units in 3 different houses here in FL past 3 years.
All similar quotes $11K, $8.5K work was done for $5.5K

I bought one of the 8000 btu from the HD / Amazon slickdeal two weeks ago, returned one for shipping damage, the replacement made this awful vibration when starting up in the middle of the night, I actually thought a helicopter was flying over my house, after Googling I've read other reviews where this happens, returned it today, I'll stick with the old fashion window units.

Your experience is an abnormality. I've been installed 3 units at various times during the last 3 years; and in a million years I would never go back to the noisy old-fashioned units.
You'll be fine, I have a 12k BTU for my downstairs in a south facing window, and it keeps my living, dining, and kitchen along with bathroom cool without any issues at all so far. My office has a 8k and no issues so far. You'll hear more ppl complain than give praise

I have five units and none of them have ever done this. Four of my units were bought secondhand at a reduced price, marked as shipping damage, so thank you for returning them. They made it through this summer just fine.
We had the downstairs central AC unit replaced this weekend but already decided to store these for next season as they reduced our power bill greatly as we used them all summer instead and it was significantly warmer this year. They are energy efficient and allowed us to control our work rooms environment better with doors shut during long conference calls with a bonus of white noise was rather nice.
Also helped save the day a few times, once during a short power outage since it could be powered off a LifePo4 and a few times while doing renovations as I was able to cut power to the house without the SO losing work power/AC with this duo.

Disappointing. I have a 6000 LG that I swear must be 10 years old. Of course, I clean it out completely every season before storing it away. It has some decent eco features like turning fans off etc between cooling.
I was somewhat interested in one of these Midea types, but not if any savings is wiped out by units which don't last.
I've seen a few comments like this, and as a lazy uninformed person who leaves their window unit in year-round, how do you "clean it out completely"?
Do you somehow take it apart? I usually just scrub out the filter with soap & water / air dry, and try to wipe clean the slats with isopropyl alcohol .. spaying some around inside the unit thinking that I'm "sanitizing" it.
I've had 2 of these 12k units for 2 years now; 1 in my office and 1 in my Livingroom. Both are super quiet and work very well/no issues. I'm able to be on calls where I'm maybe 4 feet away from it and can't hear it at all. In addition, we don't need to change the volume while watching TV in the Livingroom when this thing turns on as you can't even hear it running. I love these so much that I jumped on 2 of the 8k units, on the deal that just happened.
Also, these have wifi and you can schedule them to run and change temps automatically. They also connect to Alexa and can follow her routines too.

12000 BTU were 289 at Costco. Selected locations.
8000 BTU were 249 at both Home Depot & Amazon a week ago. Price may drop later again.

My old 8000btu portable air would struggle to keep the same area in the 80's under the same outside temp.
As a big bonus, my electric bill has been around 100 bucks cheaper a month compared to the portable air years!
I will be picking up another one when it goes back on sale at Costco for the upstairs. I would only buy new.
