Its good use case is if you don't keep your car in the garage all the time, but still need to store it in there sometimes. At least one wall that's directly adjacent to the garage's opening often goes unused because there's hardly any space between the wall and the car's side mirror.

Now you can have an extra workbench instead of just an empty wall.
Took some digging:
This one (41") is 3/4" thick, 48" was 1-1/4"
Menards has a longer (48"), thicker (1.5"), stronger (500lb) version for $88.

Could be a good option if you need the extra length (and you have a Menards in your area}.

the previous one got that many votes just for the 48" version that supported 100lbs more. this should be at least $20 cheaper than that to justify the hot deal.

Well, the 48" version is out of stock/discontinued. This 41" workbench has the gas springs, which the 48" version didn't have. Both are slick deals, only one is available. I think $75 is slick.

Not only that, but the 48" version was much thicker at 1.25" vs this one at 0.75"

I just picked up my 48" version yesterday and the top is really nice. It's easy enough to lift that I don't see how gas springs would be an improvement

Please don't make it sound like those tiny gas springs are of any importance. If you compare the two mechanisms the other desk has some beastly joints, while these ones don't look heavy duty at all. I would not feel comfortable getting even half-way towards its weight limit.

Regardless, it is indeed a slick deal just for the solid wood top alone. The rest is like a bonus.

Am I wrong in thinking the use case for this is actually a lot smaller than one would think? Let me explain..

On paper the idea of a folding desk like this seems handy, but in reality I'm failing to see a common case (not saying there isn't a case for this, just saying it wouldn't be common).

Yes , it folds down, but in order to fold it up, essentially the floor space below it and around it (in order to actually use table) would have to be clear. If it's not clear, that means there's something in front of it when it's folded against the wall, so you'll have to move whatever that is out of the way to use the table.

So outside of having a particular object always sitting in front the table that you have to always move out and move back in when you use this desk (and outside of just visual "cleanliness" of having a table flat against a wall).. does this actually save any usable space?

Get these brackets from Amazon [amazon.com] for $29.99, then a 2x12 8' cut in half and doubled with pocket screws. Less then $50 for the whole setup. Get the satisfaction you built it yourself...lol

I have the 41" sitting in a box. Wanted a lighter version to make it more manageable (this is like 1/3rd the weight of the bigger table) and for my use (sewing and stuff) there's no need for 400lbs capacity. Haven't put it up yet but this is way better for my needs in a small storage room
