Beware if you host your "content" on dedicated servers. They started implementing IP blocking, so if your hosting your stuff on Hetzner, or services with Hetzner IPs they will start blocking access. Not sure how long before it moves to other providers.

Are you trying to figure out what Plex is or what the Plex Pass is?

Plex has two pieces. One piece is the server. You would install a program called Plex Media Server on your computer. Then you tell Plex the location of all your movies and media you own. It scans everything and organizes it.

Then you go to your smart tv devices (fire tv, android box, roku, etc) You can install the Plex CLIENT on these and watch the movies from your Plex your server.

Plex is free if that is how you use it.

The Plex PASS is just some additional features for Plex. It lets you watch movies on your phone/mobile devices. You can download movies from your server. It allows "hardware transcoding". Skip intro/skip credits, etc.

I'll be the first.

Plex lost their way long ago. I want (and bought) to play local media, not have them push their stream crap on me.

Long time Emby user. Love it. UI isn't as polished as Plex but it's worth the effort to use because of my hate for plex streaming.

Also JellyFin.

Plex newbie... I put some personal movies, converted from HI8 tapes, and added them to Plex (the only items I currently have on Plex lifetime). But for some reason Plex has assigned an image from the web as the movie cover. How do I get rid of it or replace it with something else. It just looks funny when you have a movie of kids and it is showing an inappropriate cover from a commercial movie. Would like to delete the covers on those movies before sharing with my family.

Suggestions?
Change from Movie library to Video library.

Why would you host your media server on a cloud server? If you were really trying to bootstrap it you can buy a PC on eBay for $150 and plug in an external hard drive.
because not everyone has fiber in their house and they want to watch their media when travelling.

I feel ya. I don't use Plex for 4K content because Jellyfin / Emby with DirectPlay on Infusion works incredibly well if I'm on my home network. I will say that for 1080p content that I want to watch anywhere in the world, Plex is almost plug and play. So for 1080p content outside my house, Plex is my go-to.

Last I checked for Jellyfin I need to twiddle with my Network settings a lot more, and introduce a reverse proxy that I host somewhere myself. Is that still the case?

Plex died for me when they stopped supporting photo uploads and started pushing their garbage streams on us without allow it all to be hidden away entirely.

Wow pay 100 bucks to open and play your own files sounds amazing!
Let's say your files are on computer A with terabytes of storage. How would you watch that on Apple TV or NVIDIA shield where you have a good surround sound system and a nice big screen?

Lifelong Plex user but rethinking after seeing how they parse your data and block accordingly. Thinking about open source Jellyfin.

I want so badly to use Jellyfin but the apps just aren't there and I rarely ever watch on my computer. Jellyfin also don't support audio delay. It seems like half my files have to be adjusted as the audio doesn't match up with the video. Unfortunately, Plex is still the king for your home video server.

I'm not a fan of the comment you're responding to, but to answer your question...there are plenty of alternatives. Kodi, for one.

Plex Pass is "ok" if your use case is 4k hardware transcoding, like if you're sharing your media with other people and they need to stream 4K. Having said that, you don't necessarily need Plex Pass for that (Intel Quick Sync). It really depends on your hardware, use case and bandwidth.

Plex is blocking certain cloud hosting providers and seems to be pivoting away more from self-hosted server software to licensing their own ad supported content. Emby/Jellyfin are the way to go.

These clowns at Plex just banned entire data centers just after completely tracking what their users were streaming. This is what getting in investors and dirty hands do to companies.

Now they want people to buy their pass, haha. after running this little piggy circus.

Hail Jellyfin
