Beware if you host your "content" on dedicated servers. They started implementing IP blocking, so if your hosting your stuff on Hetzner, or services with Hetzner IPs they will start blocking access. Not sure how long before it moves to other providers.

Are you trying to figure out what Plex is or what the Plex Pass is?

Plex has two pieces. One piece is the server. You would install a program called Plex Media Server on your computer. Then you tell Plex the location of all your movies and media you own. It scans everything and organizes it.

Then you go to your smart tv devices (fire tv, android box, roku, etc) You can install the Plex CLIENT on these and watch the movies from your Plex your server.

Plex is free if that is how you use it.

The Plex PASS is just some additional features for Plex. It lets you watch movies on your phone/mobile devices. You can download movies from your server. It allows "hardware transcoding". Skip intro/skip credits, etc.

I'll be the first.

Plex lost their way long ago. I want (and bought) to play local media, not have them push their stream crap on me.

Long time Emby user. Love it. UI isn't as polished as Plex but it's worth the effort to use because of my hate for plex streaming.

Also JellyFin.

I'm not a fan of the comment you're responding to, but to answer your question...there are plenty of alternatives. Kodi, for one.

Plex Pass is "ok" if your use case is 4k hardware transcoding, like if you're sharing your media with other people and they need to stream 4K. Having said that, you don't necessarily need Plex Pass for that (Intel Quick Sync). It really depends on your hardware, use case and bandwidth.
Fair enough. I tried so hard to get Kodi running smoothly but it feels really rough around the edges and I found myself troubleshooting more than watching. Jealous of people who can run it on a Fire Tv stick or an NUC without issues haha

I feel ya. I don't use Plex for 4K content because Jellyfin / Emby with DirectPlay on Infusion works incredibly well if I'm on my home network. I will say that for 1080p content that I want to watch anywhere in the world, Plex is almost plug and play. So for 1080p content outside my house, Plex is my go-to.

Last I checked for Jellyfin I need to twiddle with my Network settings a lot more, and introduce a reverse proxy that I host somewhere myself. Is that still the case?
You should put a reverse proxy in front of any public facing service as a best security practice. NginX proxy manager is dead simple.

I got Plex for $75 lifetime pass 5 to 6 years ago wondering how long it would go. It's been going good so far. I use it with my ds920 and it was pretty much plug and play with no fiddling around. Tried Ember and Jellyfin but had trouble accessing them outside my home network. I don't use any of the streaming provided by Plex. I just pin my folders on the dashboard for quick access.
Quick question: trying to setup my ebook library with a similar setup but having difficulty. Anybody has any suggestions? I have tried ubooquity and calibre but not able to set it up in ds920 and also not able to access outside home network through app

I'm always torn, I didn't use it that much back then, and they've only offered that 75 once since as far as I've seen. I keep waiting for it to be offered at that again, but alas.
Just get it now. People said the same thing back then. Once you get it you can then be like me and too lazy to set up your plex server but slowly accumulate the component necessary to build one with older PC parts.

Wait people were uploading to this companies servers their pirated content and PLEX was forced to enforce their TOS about pirated content but then told customers to just host at home? If I am understanding this correctly, what is so bad about hosting your own things at home?

Plex died for me when they stopped supporting photo uploads and started pushing their garbage streams on us without allow it all to be hidden away entirely.
Why did they drop the photo uploads? That was one of the better features tbh Frown

usually some variant of any of the following:
  • you have to actually set up and configure hardware, the horror
  • if you open one port on your router then you will get super pwned in no time
  • home internet upload speeds are slow and often unreliable and home internet only give a dynamic ip address - most valid point

How good is the download function? Am I right that I can load up say, an iPad with movies off my server and play them online on a plane?
Not great, Linus techtips has complained about that feature being broken multiple times.

Fully agree. I'm using Infuse with Plex on my iPad in order to have a reliable download function.

Let's say your files are on computer A with terabytes of storage. How would you watch that on Apple TV or NVIDIA shield where you have a good surround sound system and a nice big screen?
Create a shared network folder with those files on computer A and then connect that folder on your devices using any basic file explorer app that has networking capabilities.

Video player apps like VLC among others will allow you to add shared folders in the app's library as well.

Good service. They don't always focus on the most logical features and some of their core features aren't worse than other options JellyFin/Emby but overall it's subjectively the most attractive UI

You just get terrible speed if you're trying to access it from the outside.

Also you need to keep that server up, connected and running 24x7, which might not be feasible for everyone

Dynamic IP is fine, even no public ip is okay. Just need to a setup a private virtual network. (e.g. ZeroTier)

Purchase PlexPass for $75 3 years ago, seems worth it. Simple and easy enough for most users.

Yes, I agree. With Plex you don't _have_ to, but with Jellyfin you do. That's my understanding at least. Happy to be wrong.
