Beware if you host your "content" on dedicated servers. They started implementing IP blocking, so if your hosting your stuff on Hetzner, or services with Hetzner IPs they will start blocking access. Not sure how long before it moves to other providers.

Are you trying to figure out what Plex is or what the Plex Pass is?

Plex has two pieces. One piece is the server. You would install a program called Plex Media Server on your computer. Then you tell Plex the location of all your movies and media you own. It scans everything and organizes it.

Then you go to your smart tv devices (fire tv, android box, roku, etc) You can install the Plex CLIENT on these and watch the movies from your Plex your server.

Plex is free if that is how you use it.

The Plex PASS is just some additional features for Plex. It lets you watch movies on your phone/mobile devices. You can download movies from your server. It allows "hardware transcoding". Skip intro/skip credits, etc.

I'll be the first.

Plex lost their way long ago. I want (and bought) to play local media, not have them push their stream crap on me.

Long time Emby user. Love it. UI isn't as polished as Plex but it's worth the effort to use because of my hate for plex streaming.

Also JellyFin.

Thanks, what is quicksync?
It's a feature on Intel processors to encode/decode video efficiently. Plex blocks the use of this unless you pay for Plex Plass. Plex alternatives allows the use of this feature without a paywall.

I used to be a Plex (free) user for 4 years. I loved it on my Roku and Apple TV. It would always have its trouble when outside of my local network. Especially when trying to download on mobile/iPad, it would have tons of fails.

The thing that threw me over the hump was when my internet connection at home was down and I wanted to stream something from the NAS. Lo and behold, Plex would not allow me to stream since it needs to talk to their central servers to do basic functions. This made no sense to me so I began test running Jellyfin for a few months to see how they would work. While they don't work as smoothly as Plex, I am happy to know that even when my internet is down, I can still stream from my local NAS.

Going to donate the $95 to Jellyfin development instead.

Maybe you should have read how to do local streaming instead of giving up and switching to an inferior product.

You just need to add your local network under Settings > Network > "List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth."

Then you access the local server by IP on port 32400 like https://10.0.0.69:32400/

Trying to figure out your comment. Seems like a you issue, not the product.

Emby takes exactly the same amount of time to setup and get running as Plex does. Same firewall config issues. There is almost zero meaningful difference between the two.

Emby on the other hand is faster in every other respect. Transcoding, skipping, resume etc.

UI isn't as pretty (like I said) but that small knock on Emby is worth it to not deal with Plex.

I still run both in docker containers. I've been a Plex pass owner since 2013 and Emby premier since 2020. 99% of my media is direct stream and Plex is just slower by a lot.

I want so badly to use Jellyfin but the apps just aren't there and I rarely ever watch on my computer. Jellyfin also don't support audio delay. It seems like half my files have to be adjusted as the audio doesn't match up with the video. Unfortunately, Plex is still the king for your home video server.
Is the Jellyfin Roku channel no good? I was going to test it out, now that it's available.

I've been enjoying Plex since 2013 and lifetime since 2017. As others have mentioned it has definitely changed a bit over the past 10 years. For me, lifetime membership has been well worth it. It's not perfect. One annoyance is Plex including their own streaming service. It's easily avoidable if you just unpin it from the sidebar. It's something I have all friends and family do. Another one is since I think May 2022, even with my Plex Pass my users can't download my media. Their account had to be created before that date even if I give them the ability. Silly but it's a small thorn. There are way too many pros for me to switch to Jellyfin or Emby (that latter I tried and it's lacking so much). For instance the integration I have with my Discord server, a free third party app named Tautulli, and some automation scripts to kill certain types of transcodes, paused streams for x amount of minutes, etc are so awesome.

If you're hosting at home and plan on it long-term I wouldn't hesitate to to go lifetime.

IMO Jellyfin on Roku is the best smart tv version of Jellyfin. UI is smooth and plays without buffering and subtitles work without a hitch.

1. Roku
2. Android/Google TV
3. Apple TV

I don't have fiber and can access my Plex library remotely. It's just a matter of properly setting up your network.

I run a pretty robust home server off my synology 1019 and use Plex as my front end to serve LAN tvs, gaming systems, smart speakers (plex audio user... i know), tablets, etc., and this includes a tv tuner/dvr home OTA. The plex pass is definitely worth it. I have plex running on every capable device and it's super easy handoffs wiith multiple users switching between devices. Never a problem. I may be the minority in this thread, but I've never had an issue with download and go content (kids ipad) or streaming. I 99% of the time VPN and stream while traveling BUT I have used their remote option before and it also worked - Just prefer VPN.

I do not like how Plex is forcing their streaming channels on the user. I can honestly see how folks are getting irate and see Plex pushing away from its roots. I'm able to hide and not use their services the best I can to my liking for now; however, there may be a time when I get fed up and go full team jellyfin. I'm just not there yet.

How good is the download function? Am I right that I can load up say, an iPad with movies off my server and play them online on a plane?
yes you can do this. Just open up the Plex "Downloads - On Device" and you'll find all the ones you've elected to download on Plex only. similarly to itunes, etc. don't expect to find the file easily using file explorer, its meant to be played from the Plex App
