Beware if you host your "content" on dedicated servers. They started implementing IP blocking, so if your hosting your stuff on Hetzner, or services with Hetzner IPs they will start blocking access. Not sure how long before it moves to other providers.

Are you trying to figure out what Plex is or what the Plex Pass is?

Plex has two pieces. One piece is the server. You would install a program called Plex Media Server on your computer. Then you tell Plex the location of all your movies and media you own. It scans everything and organizes it.

Then you go to your smart tv devices (fire tv, android box, roku, etc) You can install the Plex CLIENT on these and watch the movies from your Plex your server.

Plex is free if that is how you use it.

The Plex PASS is just some additional features for Plex. It lets you watch movies on your phone/mobile devices. You can download movies from your server. It allows "hardware transcoding". Skip intro/skip credits, etc.

I'll be the first.

Plex lost their way long ago. I want (and bought) to play local media, not have them push their stream crap on me.

Long time Emby user. Love it. UI isn't as polished as Plex but it's worth the effort to use because of my hate for plex streaming.

Also JellyFin.

Plex is the only way for me since I use Plex Debrid using a cheap mini PC with QuickSync. Best setup ever IMO.
I did not know about Plex debrid, just set it up and it's amazing. Thanks for the tip!

Why would you host your media server on a cloud server? If you were really trying to bootstrap it you can buy a PC on eBay for $150 and plug in an external hard drive.
So I can play it in the minivan roku without poking holes in my firewall or throttling based on upload bandwidth

Plex newbie... I put some personal movies, converted from HI8 tapes, and added them to Plex (the only items I currently have on Plex lifetime). But for some reason Plex has assigned an image from the web as the movie cover. How do I get rid of it or replace it with something else. It just looks funny when you have a movie of kids and it is showing an inappropriate cover from a commercial movie. Would like to delete the covers on those movies before sharing with my family.

Suggestions?
Create a "home movies" library, not a "movies" library, for those files. Then choose your own artwork or it'll just use a thumbnail from the video by default.

Rightfully so. These users were uploading massive amounts of pirated content to hetzner, then charging a subscription fee to access it, using plex as the front end. I am sure plex was covering themselves or getting stop letters. This was clearly a violation of ToS and beyond the scope or intention of hosting a home server and maybe sharing it with a few friends.

How good is the download function? Am I right that I can load up say, an iPad with movies off my server and play them online on a plane?
It's awful and unusable, unfortunately. I love Plex but this feature is frustrating. I use VLC on my iPad to load movies.

Got this years ago, use it constantly, don't regret my purchase at all. However, I would look into open source competitors like Jellyfin before pulling the trigger on this deal.

Click the ... button in the bottom right corner of the cover image on Plex. Then choose "Unmatch" and it will remove the commercial movie data and you can add your own.

Let's say your files are on computer A with terabytes of storage. How would you watch that on Apple TV or NVIDIA shield where you have a good surround sound system and a nice big screen?
Does it work if you connect hdmi directly from computer to receiver input? Or cast screen mirror through another device like chrome cast, shield, roku?

If we are talking copyright and ToS I don't think sharing content with friends is ok

> Authorized User(s). Subject to any third party license restrictions for applicable Content, you may enable members of your immediate family, for whom you will be responsible (each, an "Authorized User(s)"), to access and use the Plex Solution so long as all such use remains in compliance with this TOS.

And with that, sharing content with stranger really isn't much different from sharing with friends, legally speaking.

Sometimes I find these hypocritical comments hilarious.
