Black Mesa is so worth it. Somehow feels like a brand new game while also like you are playing the original at the same time. I do not think they could have done it any better. Most remakes either stray too far from the original or adhere so closely to it there are no improvements. These fools pulled some black magic with Black Mesa.

Now, no clue what is different about Black Mesa vs the Definitive Edition.

According to Wikipedia, the Definitive Edition was a free update for owners of the game and had to do with some lighting upgrades and revamps of non-Xen levels.

I don't know all the details, but I think it's a big credit to Valve that they allowed this game to go out as a commercial release.

Can't recommend this enough. It is faithful to the original, but makes enough subtle changes that it feels fresh and new. Especially Xen.

Agree. If I had to pick nits, I would say it's a bit too long. Feels slightly stretched out, but damn, so impressive. Cannot recommend this enough.

This is the only way to play Half-Life now. As absolutely critical as the original was to the gaming industry, and was a marvel for its time, it came from an age where we were still trying to figure out 3D gaming. This update was a very faithful recreation, and is a ton of fun to play. If you've never played Half-Life and want to know what it was all about, this is the way to do it.

1 issue I had with Half-Life 1 and 2 was they for some reason always made me nauseous. Great games, but could never play them. Even over several generations of PC upgrades. I'm wondering it Black Mesa will be different.

what controllers does this game support as I have played a copy of this and no controllers would work 100% ... could not bind buttons/sticks?

Just purchased and played for a couple of hours. Yep, this is a great remake. Super high quality. Even the additional voice acting is pro. I'm not sure I can picture playing the original again!

have you tried the original with ray tracing? changes the entire feel of the game visually.

If you *purchased* Black Mesa on Steam before the game was upgraded to DE, you automatically have DE in your library even if the game is not labeled that. It's been impossible for years to buy a non-DE version of the game.

What are you planning it on? Via Steam Deck, Steam OS, etc there are really good profiles that emulate mouse / keyboard. I would imagine you could even do the same thing within Steam on a PC.

I haven't played it, but I have watched some of the videos. The lighting obviously looks worlds better, but it still doesn't help the low-resolution textures, low-poly models, etc. Similar to Quake I ray-traced...super impressive and looks amazing for some of the lighting effects, but you just can't get around the other aspects of the game that are still from the late-90s.

Noice! I was able to get Alyx and all of the valve packs the other day for dirt cheap. Then the next day able to get Black mesa for $4. All the valve games for less than $40 including Alyx and black mesa. Score!!!

Really? Last I looked the VR mod didn't work great for Black Mesa. I'll have to check again as I just started last night. It is similar to Half-life but different enough that it feels like a totally new game.
